A bizarre campaign web video from U.S. Senate candidate Carly Fiorina

BIZARRE AD PORTRAYS CALIFORNIA SENATE CANDIDATE AS POSSESSED ANIMAL

A new saying was entered into the lexicon of political phraseology on Thursday: “Demon Sheep.”

The phrase comes to us courtesy of California U.S. Senate candidate Carly Fiorina and her “amazing” 201 second web video attempting to rake a Republican opponent over the coals for being a “Fiscal Conservative in Name Only.”

At least, that’s I what I think she is attempting to do… the scattered narrative and random imagery make it pretty hard to tell the exact point of the video, if one exists.

The subject of Fiorina’s attack, former U.S. Rep. Tom Campbell, is portrayed as possessed sheep in the odd ad — at one point rising and falling from a Roman column, at another frolicking with the rest of the flock.

“Who would remember that, as the governor’s chief budget officer, Campbell was the architect of our disastrous 2005 budget — a budget so bloated with increased ongoing spending commitments and borrowing that it literally set the stage for the recent decline of California,” a narrator says. “That’s fiscally conservative, Tom?”

Ouch… I think.

Fiorina, the former CEO of Hewlett-Packard and John McCain adviser, is in the midst of a heated Republican primary race with Campbell and State Assemblyman Chuck DeVore to challenge Democrat Sen. Barbara Boxer. She had been looking for a way to distinguish herself from the rest of the field, and, well, I’m pretty sure this ad will should it.

So, while there’s no doubt “Demon Sheep” will be in the dictionary of political idioms, it remains to be seen what, exactly, it will end up meaning.

__________

UPDATE: The DeVore campaign quickly responded to the ad. “We were stunned to be totally frank,” said Joshua Trevino, DeVore’s communications director. He added that the Fiorina campaign “seems intent on making Hollywood history rather than political history.”

__________

UPDATE 2: Now Campbell has returned fire, saying that “Fiorina’s campaign is full Mutton Meltdown mode, with an increasingly bizarre fixation on farm animals.”

Glad they’re all having fun with this out there… we sure as hell would in South Carolina.
