SC State Sen. Shane Massey addresses the Edgefield County Republican Party in Edgefield (Edgefield County GOP)
CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE RAISES MEAGER $845 IN 4TH QUARTER
State Sen. Shane Massey’s ill-fated bid for South Carolina’s third Congressional district may soon be at an end, if money is any indication.
Massey, a first-term Republican from Edgefield County, raised a paltry $845.60 during the fourth quarter of 2009, all in unitemized contributions, according to a financial disclosure filed with the Federal Election Commission.
He reported having $102,000 on hand in his Congressional coffers, but $72,000 of that money came from a pair of personal loans that will have to be repaid.
Massey’s campaign began at a disadvantage. A little-known senator from a remote corner of the district, Massey lacked the name ID and geographical advantage of his two Republican opponents, State Reps. Rex Rice and Jeff Duncan.
His only chance to make up ground would be to out-raise the field. But Massey never gained traction and now finds himself on the slipping out of the race.
