TAYLOR SWIFT, BEYONCE, LADY GAGA TAKE TOP HONORS AT AWARDS SHOW
It was all about the ladies at the Grammy Awards Sunday night, with women taking most of the top awards at the 52nd annual event.
Poor Taylor Swift, who captured the most coveted Album of the Year honors, won so many awards (four) that she couldn’t hold them all and ended up dropping one on the ground. And the biggest downside of being nearly six-feet tall is that, when you drop things, they break.
Beyonce and Lady Gaga combined for another eight Grammys, with the former winning Song of the Year and Best Female Pop Performance. And Lady Antebellum — which only has one lady member — took the award for Best Country Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals.
But the men did win some awards.
The all-male bands Kings of Leon and the Zac Brown Band each had huge nights. Kings of Leon took home three Grammy awards, including Record of the Year while Zac Brown and company earned the Best New Artist honors.
Most of the other group categories were swept by the usual suspects: the Black Eyed Peas.
And South Carolina’s own Stephen Colbert, who opened the show after a stunning performance by Lady Gaga and Elton John, won the Best Comedy Album award for “A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift Of All!
The night wasn’t without its fair share of show-stopping performances, either.
Swift teamed up with Stevie Nicks to preform a medley of hits. There was also a moving tribute to Michael Jackson, courtesy of Usher, Carrie Underwood, Celine Dion, Smokey Robinson and Jennifer Hudson. And the Dave Matthews Band proved that they still “have it” after a roller coaster 18 years on the music scene.
Rookie rapper Drake used the show to burst onto the scene with a rendition of his hit “Forever” — featuring Eminem, Travis Barker and Lil Wayne — that was probably excellent in person, but was largely voided out by CBS’s inept censors who bleeped out much of the performance.
Perhaps the most disappointing performance of the night came from Beyonce. All of that talent went missing in a lackluster and awkward performance of Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know.”
