Barry Steenkamp, Father of Oscar Pistorius’ Victim Has Died

Barry Steenkamp, father of the woman who was fatally shot by Oscar Pistorius, has died at the age of 80.

A family spokesperson has announced that Barry Steenkamp, the father of Reeva Steenkamp, the woman who was fatally shot by Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius years ago, has died at the age of 80.

The news was confirmed by the Steenkamps’ family lawyer and spokesperson, Tania Koen. His death was also confirmed by the foundation set up by the Steenkamp family in memory of their late daughter, Reeva. The foundation revealed that Barry died in his sleep on Thursday evening.

In a statement posted on the foundation’s Facebook page, it said, ”

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden and peaceful passing of Barry Steenkamp. Barry was a blessing to many, and he will be remembered with love and great fondness. We find solace in the knowledge that he is now with his beloved Reeva.”

Barry fought for justice over the death of his daughter Reeva, who was a model and law graduate. She died at the age of 29. AP reports that Pistorius had shot Reeva, his “girlfriend, multiple times through a closed toilet cubicle door in his home in the predawn hours of Valentine’s Day 2013.” He was convicted of murder and sentenced to 13 years and five months in prison after a series of appeals.
