HOLIDAY SEASON OFFERS NO SIGN OF UNITY AT GOVERNOR’S MANSION
It’s been a painful, six-month whirlwind for South Carolina’s first family.
In June, Gov. Mark Sanford disappeared for five days and, when he returned, he admitted to an ongoing affair with a woman from Argentina. And ever since, both he and his wife Jenny have been at the center of a media frenzy — as well as some serious marital difficulties.
So it comes as no surprise that the Holiday Season has been anything but joyous at the Governor’s Mansion this year.
From the Associated Press:
The couple no longer shares a home, but on Thursday Jenny Sanford fulfilled her traditional role as first lady, welcoming the public to see the decorations at the governor’s mansion.
That’s where her husband lives, but she and the boys stay at the family’s home on Sullivan’s Island, 120 miles away.
Jenny Sanford and two of the boys skipped the traditional state Christmas tree lighting last weekend, while Mark Sanford sat between his two youngest sons. Even the tree is a little less festive this year — because of the recession, the garden club that puts it up had to buy a shorter one than usual.
Mark Sanford did attend the open house, arriving about two hours after it began — and after the crowd had mostly thinned out. The governor gave his wife a quick kiss, but the two spent much of the night about 10 feet apart, entertaining separate groups.
As I said on Twitter earlier, if I were Mark Sanford and my wife looked at me like Jenny did in this photo by the AP’s Brett Flashnick, I would immediately hire a food taster and car starter. Immediately.
I think Rasputin had one and he and Sanford seem to have a lot in common.

We would not be so lucky for Jenny to take him out, Godfather style…
I personally covered this event for WIS-TV last night. This one, single photograph is a misrepresentation of Mrs. Sanfords demeanor during this cheerful event. She was smiling, greeting guests and truly enjoying an evening inside this beautifully decorated home. I hope the readers of your blog are not influenced by a one milli-second snapshot that depicts the opposite. In an interview with me, Mrs Sanford said she planned to follow with special holiday events like baking cookies and making a homemade fudge sauce, and Governor Sanford reflected on when his family used to cut down their own tree from their farm. They were delightful.. Not sneering at each other. Come on Scoop…
Come on Hannah… Unhappy people are the most likely to bake cookies and make fudge sauce. That’s why they’re called comfort foods. You’ve got to read between the lines!
Great to have personal insights from people like Hannah to counter all the wolves that have been “sic’d” on the Sanfords to release only the negative aspects. After all, marriages have survived infidelity and will continue to do so forever. I am sure after 20 years of marriage, there remains a certain feeling and respect.
I disagree Adam. I am not making cookies, or fudge sauce. I still have every single problem with the privatized Social Security account I found before this ” argentina trip” .
Google Sanford and his drive for privatized Social Security. Understand while he is being investigated that my checks have been stopped.
No, no gifts and no treats this Christmas, lost my home this year, had medications stopped being paid for because of the second state supported fraudulent Part D account, been chased by goons, home broken into, surveilled…and more.
I don’t think his ” affair” is over with .
The Governor was definitely wrong in what he did, but the public displays and statements issued by Ms. Sanford certainly shows she is no lady. It makes what the Governor did more understandable to me and does she really think her endorsement of a particular gubernatorial candidate makes any difference to the people of South Carolina?
