TROOPERS TO GIVE OUT COUPONS FOR GOOD DRIVING BEHAVIOR

The next time you get pulled over, it could earn you some free Chick-fil-A food — that is, if you live in the Lowcountry and are wearing your seat belt.

Police in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties are teaming up with the fast food chain to give out coupons for free chicken sandwiches to drivers who are wearing seat belts.

The campaign to reward good driving behavior will run until at least Jan. 1.

“It’s just being tested in this area,” Lance Cpl. Bob Beres of the South Carolina Highway Patrol told the Charleston Post and Courier. “After the first of the year, we’ll evaluate it and we may make it statewide.”

Beres said that drivers won’t be pulled over for wearing their seat belt but that the coupons will be handed out during legitimate traffic stops and at driver-safety checkpoints.

“You might get stopped for having a headlight out, or even for speeding,” he said. “You’ll still get a speeding ticket, but if you’re wearing a seat belt, you’ll get a free sandwich too.”

And if you’re not wearing your seat belt, expect at least a $25 ticket.
