RHODES AGAIN DEFEATS MCBRIDE WITH 55% OF VOTE
Former mayor of Myrtle Beach Mark McBride came up nearly 500 votes short of ousting the man who defeated him in 2005.
John Rhodes was re-elected to a second term as mayor Tuesday with 55 percent of the vote in a runoff election. Rhodes beat McBride for the second time in four years.
Of course, McBride took the defeat like a champ, blaming everyone but himself. “I’m disappointed, and it shows that it’s a city of greed and what half a million dollars can buy,“ McBride said.
McBride earned a whopping 2 percent of the vote in the 2004 Republican Senatorial primary against Jim DeMint, David Beasley, Thomas Ravenel, and Charlie Condon.
It was during that campaign that he earned his “bobblehead” title by creating a website that portrayed DeMint, Beasley, Ravenel, and Condon as bobblehead dolls. Sadly, that was about the most successful part of that endeavor for McBride.

Adam–sorry to disagree with you but on this one the real losers are visitors to Myrtle Beach. Mayor Rhodes had a campaign war chest of $200K+, a significant portion of which was raised for him by his friends in the MB Chamber of Commerce. But the issue at hand is not just money driven it goes much deeper. As MB and Horry county have grown there has been a tremendous influx of new residents that hail not from the Carolinas but other parts of the US. I have seen first hand how they treat the citizens of MB who have been there for years and it is not with respect.
The beach (not just Myrtle Beach but the entire Grand Strand) is being divided on socio-economic lines that besides not being healthy are not condusive for a long term growth plan. I read a comment on another blog written by a supporter of Rhodes that stated McBride and his loser supporters could now shut up and leave MB. The Rhodes people had won, just like the North won the war and Obama won the election and the losers were not welcome to stay! Not exactly how to build a community is it?
At the end of the day the real losers are the visitors to the Beach. I grew up in Florence and use to enjoy taking my kids and now my grand-daughter to the beach, not anymore. I, like the bikers, the students, assorted conventioners, etc. can take a hint we gone and not only are we not coming back we are going to warn everyone we can to avoid the beach like it was a leper colony, then we can see how far their 1% ad tax goes…
Although I’m a Democrat, I’m a dedicated non-authoritarian and an Obama apostate … so I find myself in agreement with the Tea Party Movement on many issues. ALL of them in North Myrtle Beach and a clear majority of them in Myrtle Beach are totally opposed to the excessive taxation.
And speaking of authoritarian rule, when they had their Tea Party event in July, the city would not let them have a booth with a display and literature protesting the tax! Is it any wonder they don’t like Rhodes?
Taxation without representation was what started the original Tea Party, as I recall. Here is a perfect example of that. Nobody voted to have such a tax, on top of a tax rate that was already too high — and it was only levied to make up for the extreme economic shortfall caused by their failed policy of selective tourism in ending the bike rallys in the city limit. That was also something nobody voted for, and ran opposite of Rhodes campaign promise to continue the rallys.
Think about it … if McBride is so bad and Rhodes is so great, why did the Rhodes camp have to outspend him five to one and bring in that goon Mike Green to trash every aspect of his life in such a dishonest way in all media, spoof his Facebook account, impersonate him in FB chats, etc.?
Imagine what McBride might have done with that much money. Taxaholic John “If you don’t like it you can leave” Rhodes would be history!

Personally like mark and his family. Politically not so much. Love him or hate him, Mcbride was just too inflexible to be effective. Historically, most of his antics were to draw attention to himself and his only real cause… Mark’s politcal future. The fact that Rhodes had to outspend him in multiples speaks volumes more to John’s shortcomings than those of Mcbride. I feel sorry for all McBride supporters. It’s a BEACH to gin up hope only to see to see the status quo prevail. A more bitter pill to swallow would have been the disappointment of four more years of staus quo, coupled with one or two false prophets looking to the next political battles.
