AMTRAK TRAIN COLLIDES WITH CAR TRYING TO BEAT CROSSING ARM

A tragic train-car wreck near the small town of Hardeeville left four people dead Monday.

Authorities said an Amtrak passenger train struck a car carrying three adults and a 12-year-old child near the South Carolina-Georgia state line. The car was attempting to cross the railroad tracks at the intersection of Main Street (S.C. 46) and U.S. 17 and all inside were killed.

No one on the train was injured.

Hardeeville interim city manager Ted Felder told the Associated Press that the collision happened at 9 p.m. Monday when the car tried to get around a crossing arm and beat the train. Felder said the train, which was headed from Charleston to Savannah, Ga., pushed the car about a mile down the tracks before being able to stop.

The names of the victims were not immediately released.
