CONGRESSMAN SAYS COUNTY GOP’S DECISION TO CENSOR SENATOR WAS WRONG

Congressman Joe Wilson Thursday joined former South Carolina GOP chairman Katon Dawson in defending U.S. Lindsey Graham against a group of Republicans who would see his ouster for working toward a bi-partisan alternative energy solution.

Per The Politico, Wilson released a statement saying that “Graham has been a great leader for our state and party” and that the Charleston County Republican Party’s decision to censure the state’s senior senator was wrong.

“I appreciate everything he has done for me and his tireless work in helping Republicans at all levels of government. He’s a team player,” Wilson said. “Ronald Reagan always said that people who agree with you 80 percent of the time should be considered a good friend. Reagan was a wise man and if we want to build a strong, vibrant Republican Party we should follow his advice.”

Graham has come under fire by some Republicans for working with Democrats to include in a climate change bill measures that would expand offshore drilling as well as nuclear energy, clean coal and natural gas — something the GOP has ironically wanted for years.

Wilson’s reference to Reagan, a conservative icon, couldn’t be more appropriate.

On a previous post on The Palmetto Scoop, one commenter left a particularly poignant passage from the former president that knee-jerk Republicans would be wise to heed.

“When I began entering into the give and take of legislative bargaining in Sacramento, a lot of the most radical conservatives who had supported me during the election didn’t like it,” Reagan wrote in his autobiography, An American Life. “‘Compromise’ was a dirty word to them and they wouldn’t face the fact that we couldn’t get all of what we wanted today. They wanted all or nothing and they wanted it all at once. If you don’t get it all, some said, don’t take anything.”

Added Reagan, “If you got 75 or 80 percent of what you were asking for, I say, you take it and fight for the rest later, and that’s what I told these radical conservatives who never got used to it.”

I wouldn’t get the mic to close. This mouth breathing idiot might drool on it and electrocute himself.

The 80% idea may work – only if the 20% is not bed rock core issues. The fact that Graham voted for TARP is an example of his basic lack of understanding of economic issues and short coming as a conservative.

It is laughable to see the circular firing squad the conservatives have out there. GB – President Bush was the one that signed TARP and now you want to hang that vote on Lindsay…Come on, how stupid are you? Reagan was a great man and pragmatic. If the conservatives don’t lighten up on the litmus tests they are going to be a very, very lonely minority party for a long time.

    Adam,

I’d be interested in learning how this site is different from Senator Graham’s press office. Seems like you are very quick to come to his rescue, and have never, to my knowledge, been critical of ANY of his policy positions…. I could be wrong, but I’ll leave it to you to explain.

If you want to send a message to the SC GOP elites, start working to get piss ant Bob Inglis thrown out in the primaries.

Lindsey Graham is John McCain’s lapdog.

Using a quote from Reagan as a defense of Lindsay Graham only shows ignorance. I agree that if you can get 75 – 80 % that you should take it. Unfortunately, in this case, we would be getting less than 1% and conceding 99%. This is unacceptable by anyone’s standards.
