27% OF VOTERS ON LEFT LIKE GOP CONGRESSMAN IN PRIMARY

A poll of hundreds of Democrats in South Carolina showed a clear Republican winner in Tuesday night’s gubernatorial debate: Congressman Gresham Barrett.

Following the debate, the South Carolina New Democrats asked 602 left-leaning voters who they would cast their ballot for if next year’s election were held today.

There were no surprises among the five Democratic candidates, as 34 percent of voters chose primary frontrunner State Sen. Vincent Sheheen.

But when asked which of the five Republicans running for governor was most likely to get their vote, 27 percent of the Democrats chose Barrett.

Those polled didn’t say why they liked Barrett; the New Democrat’s website only said, “while the results are not scientific, they are generally indicative of the attitudes of the participants.”

But Barrett’s support of federal stimulus legislation and vote in favor of last year’s massive bank bailout could have something to do with the reason Democrats like him.

State School Superintendent Jim Rex came in second to Sheheen in the Democrat column, with lawyer Mullins McLeod in third, lobbyist Dwight Drake in fourth, and State Sen. Robert Ford a distant fifth.

For Republicans, Attorney General Henry McMaster finished second, Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer was third, State Rep. Nikki Haley was fourth and State Sen. Larry Grooms was fifth.

Stimulus/bailouts weren’t discussed. This was a debate about the environment, and despite the poll, McMaster was the strongest Republican.

    LAUGH. CAN WE SAY SPIN?

If you ask Dems “which of the five Republicans running for governor was most likely to get their vote” you are not giving them an option in their own party.

    This is not a story.

I’ll have to be critical of the poll on this one.
If I remember right, Barret was at the top of the “R” list and both the Dems and Reps areas automatically filled the top person in the list – and there wasn’t the ability to leave them blank.
I’d guess more than half those votes were people who wouldn’t have picked a “R” and didn’t think it was worth wasting thinking time on to change the mark from Barrett to someone else who sucked.
Fact is, a bunch of Dems just don’t think the stupid Republican choices are even worth bothering to mark.
That would be different from all the Republicans who answered polls on the Democratic primary choices just to vote against Obama because of his race. But that’s Repugnantcans for you.

    Adam -

You cannot be serious. Your boss’s client, Henry McMaster, came in at 24%. Considering the sample size, he is statisticly tied with Barrett.

Does this mean Democrats support the Henry McMaster dungeon rape case failure, a slam dunk case that even an L1 at Charleston School of Law could win?

Does this mean Democrats support the Henry McMaster pay-to-play policy for hiring his trial lobby supporters?

Does it mean Democrats support the Henry McMaster Craigslist publicity stunt?

Of course it doesn’t. This is just a blatant opportunity for you to attack an opponent of someone your employing firm gets money from. What a stupid post. Your readers deserve better.
