11.6% OF WORKERS WITHOUT A JOB, 5TH HIGHEST JOBLESS RATE IN U.S.
Cue the Great Depression-era breadline photos because South Carolina’s unemployment rate is once again on the rise.
The state’s jobless rate rose to 11.6 percent in September, up two-tenths of a point from the previous month, despite a drop in the labor force. The rise in unemployment came after two months of declines.
South Carolina now has the fifth highest unemployment rate in the country, trailing only Michigan (15.3 percent), Nevada (13.3 percent), Rhode Island (13 percent) and California (12.2 percent).
More than 250,000 South Carolinians were out of work while the total labor force fell slightly to 2.17 million. The state actually added jobs during the month, but still has 68,700 fewer jobs than a year ago.
“Job growth in our state continues to struggle to keep up with job losses. As a result, the unemployment rate will remain high for the foreseeable future,“ Roosevelt T. Halley, Executive Director of the Commission, said in a statement.
The news came one day after Gov. Mark Sanford held an unemployment roundtable to discuss joblessness in the state and two days after the legislature announced it would come back later this month to extend unemployment benefits.
Word also came this week that South Carolina had lost over 24,000 factory jobs in the past year, more than at any time since 1994.

This is not rocket science. To begin Governor Sanford doesn’t need a round table discussion to figure this out. Put pressure on the Republican US Senators holding up the bill that is in the US Senate and get it passed now. Secondly while the extension gets passed begin to look at manufacturing industries that are doing well, wind tower constructio, and begin to c0ourt those industries.
so much for stimulus. thanks sanford! thanks obama!
Jeff says Bill Connor can fix everything or that we can all work for Ken. Ard
How about this:
GeneralClark Opening a new Extra High Voltage manufacturing facility in South Carolina. New jobs. Paid for by an Italian company. To help our grid. Hooah

Do you know anyone who is out of work? What it’s doing to their families? Our Senator, Jim DeMint is one of a handul of Senators blocking an extension of unemployment benefits. Let’’s get this thing done now.
Tell Jim you want him to vote yes on HR 3548 so we can get our folks the help they need. Copy the website below into your url address bar and fill out a comment form on this topic. Tell him you won’t vote for him unless he can show he cares for the unemployed here in SC. —

Senator DeMint has no worries since he doesnt have to collect unemployment benefits. As far as Im concerned he doesnt care much how the hard working American people have to struggle to get by. He doesnt have these problems so he has no idea what any of us are going through.
Let him be without a job and no income then maybe he will get it!
