CONSERVATIVE CONGRESSMAN YELLS OUT ‘YOU LIE’ DURING HEALTH CARE SPEECH

Passions flared at Barack Obama’s internationally-televised health care address to Congress Wednesday night when a South Carolina Congressman vocally accused the president of lying.

During the much-anticipated address to spin his socialized health care plan, Obama refuted claims that his reform efforts would insure illegal immigrants. Over the roar of the crowd, conservative Rep. Joe Wilson yelled out “you lie.”

Obama paused and the outburst was met with a chorus of boos from Democratic Members of Congress. Wilson’s statement drew a second “it’s not true” from the president.

Liberal pundits like MSNBC host Keith Olbermann were quick to blast Wilson, even calling for his resignation. Olbermann named the Congressman his “worst person in the world” for the day.

Some conservatives, however, called the move “heroic.” Erick Erickson of the popular website RedState called on readers to donate “a great American hero.”

Regardless of what viewers thought, though, they were certainly talking about Wilson’s emotional response.

On Twitter, Wilson’s name shot up to the number one trending topic while “Congressman, heckler, lie, liar, and shouted” became some of the most used words on the entire site.

Prior to the president’s speech, Wilson released a statement calling Obama’s plan “troubling” and calling for a bipartisan effort to “expand affordability and accessibility to health care without replacing our current health care system with a big government system.”

“The President’s speech – no matter how eloquent – will not erase the fact that the legislation being offered by his Democrat allies costs $1 trillion dollars, adds billions to our nation’s debt, and imposes taxes on individuals and small businesses which will destroy millions of jobs,” Wilson said. “That is why Americans deserve a new effort and a new bill not a new speech.”

______________

UPDATE: Wilson just released the following statement:

This evening I let my emotions get the best of me when listening to the President’s remarks regarding the coverage of illegal immigrants in the health care bill. While I disagree with the President’s statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the President for this lack of civility.

______________

UPDATE 3: Wilson’s office said that, following the President’s speech, the Congressman called the White House to personally apologize to President Obama. He spoke with Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and expressed his apologies.

______________

UPDATE 4: From Sen. Lindsey Graham:

The president’s combative tone did not justify a Member of Congress shouting out ’you lie.’ Our nation’s president deserves to be treated with respect It was inappropriate remark and I am glad an apology has been made.

UPDATE 5: Wilson’s Wikipedia page has been restricted “due to vandalism.” The page has already been edited to include a section on tonight’s outburst.

So this is what it has come to. What a sorry state of affairs! Out with Joe Wilson and his disrespectful attitude. Let’s elect some people with respect for the President and our country.

  4. 4.

Congressman Wilson has already been proven wrong. His outburst triggered journalists to examine the bill closer to see if Mr.Wilson was correct in his claim that the president was lying.

Unfortunately for Mr.Wilson, not even Fox News will defend him. Upon further examination, no illegal immigrants would be covered. The President wasn’t lying.

So, I agree with Senator McCain’s comment “Mr.Wilson should apologize immediatly”

Yes he should. No matter what side of politics your on, you (and elected official) should respect the President when he addresses a joint session in Congress.

Thank you Joe for showing what fools you guys are. Please have a press conference in the morning to complain about death panels and another in the afternoon to explain why a 1.2 trillion dollar tax cut to Paris Hilton was wisdom and a .9 trillion dollar health bill is a terrible, un-american thing.

Don’t you go all soft-headed and spineless and actually apologize, either. It won’t change how stupid you look, it’ll merely make you look more silly. Remember, a real man doesn’t apologize and doesn’t explain.

You should have a few kittens for breakfast on live TV and show people just how tough you really are.

Congressman Wilson is a prime example of what is wrong with Washington politics. If the good people of the 2nd District are not embarrassed by the so called “Gentleman from South Carolina” representing them, then they deserve what they get.

Can’t believe some conservatives are calling him a hero. That type of playgound response should be left for children. When a person is on the podium, he has the floor and respect of everyone, even the opposing side. People who are educated can wait till after what is said. I certainly hope Joe Wilson is voted out of office.

I live in south Carolina, and am ashamed that a south Carolinian was the first member of congress to call the president a “Liar”, during the joint session. The sad case is, Wilson is much like many in south Carolina. They believe the complete falsehoods promoted by right wing radio, and could care less for the truth. Joe wilson, you are an embarrassment to our state and country

Right now, Rob Miller probably can’t believe his luck. Suddenly, he’s at least a player, with FIFTY-THOUSAND in contributions flowing in tonite already. It would not surprise me if he raises somewhere in the neighborhood of $300,000 on this incident alone. Miller still has a lot of ground to make up…but all of a sudden he has a war chest with which to make a run.

It’s no wonder your congressional website is “down for maintenance” right now. I imagine you’d be receiving endless hate mail about now. But then again, maybe not, hate is a tactic of YOUR party.

I hope those that you represent wake up a reject your backward behavior. Given your most recent election battle, that seems likely. I hope I’m not overestimating the people who have already elected you more than once.

Well I can kinda understand why Joe might be upset with illegals… their voodoo women did cast a spell on Gov. Marco.
Meanwhile, Sen. LindsAy Granimal the Party Animal had a sooper time raging at the Friends of Scotland Caucus cocktail reception. Lord know you can’t trust men that don’t wear bloomers under their skirts. Wake up! Kenyans will not only take over the Cooper River Bridge Run but the hospital and doctors offices if he doesn’t scream from the galley like a hell bent Tory in Parliament.

  18. 18.

Joe Wilson: A Disrespectful, Uninformed, Nonrepresentative

    1. Military Frame: I was in the military, serving with the U.S. Army Airborne. One of the most important things we learn is respect. Respect for God, Country, and our Superiors; especially the Commander-in-Chief no matter who it is. Not only does the office of the President deserve respect, but anyone with military experience should understand that proper respect needs to be paid to our Commander in Chief.

    2. Are you for a public option. I am for any option or combination of options that helps the high number of unemployed in South Carolina to afford coverage, and helps hard working families already struggling in a tough economy be able to afford coverage. To let partisan heckling and bantering supercede this important issue is entirely wrong. The healthcare of the citizens our country isn’t an issue of right and left — it’s an issue of right and wrong.

    3. The kind of rude partisianship we saw tonight is what makes it impossible to get anything done in Washington. It is more important to some, to heckle the other side of the aisle than to work towards a real solution that helps the American people. We need people in Washington who understand firsthand the problems facing small business, and hard-working families. I know this and I’ve struggled to provide adequate care for my daughter who has autism and tried to cut corners to help my employees afford healthcare coverage.

Joe Wilson is not representative of the people of his district nor of South Carolina.

God bless Joe Wilson, a man of courage and integrity. Isn’t it interesting how shocked, how dismayed and insulted the left is to have their president maligned in a public setting. Get used to it my liberal countrymen, it is only the smallest dose of what you, your party and your allegiant media proffered upon my president. When Bush was maligned by Chavez, each and every one of you cheered him, when protesters made it through security to mock and jeer, didn’t each and every one of you celebrate. When an Iraqi journalist threw a shoe, didn’t all of you and your media swoon and say it represented “democracy in action”? Well don’t get so upset my friends when you see democracy in action that runs contrary to what you believe. Health care reform is not the answer to the problems we face in this country, congress doing right by their responsibilities to “we the people” is the answer!

Congress needs to get rid of their automatic pay raises and their 100% pay and benefits for life after serving only one term and they need to enact term limits upon themselves. Congress needs to enact a $13.25 an hour national “livable” minimum wage and tort reform that diminishes the increasing costs of providing medical care in this country. Congress needs to provide Americans with a 15% to 17% flat tax to diminish the burden on all Americans while taking loopholes away from wealthy citizens and businesses. It is congress that can make the difference between people being able to afford insurance and minimizing the burden of taxes and medical costs for everybody, but what Obama wants to do is going to create more debt, provide less care, minimize the incentives for medical breakthroughs and does nothing to solve the fundamental issues mentioned above.

Joe Wilson is an honorable man. He let his emotions get the best of him, and that was an error.

But Joe and his boys have all demonstrated a love this country and its freedoms. They have signed up for, and served honorably in the military…all ready to take a bullet for the freedom of this country.

He will withstand these verbal shots because he broke decorum…I think he can handle it. He is on a bigger mission.

You didn’t mention in your write-up that the outburst wasn’t even accurate. It never ceases to surprise me how Republicans (not conservatives–Republican partisans) can just refuse over and over and over to pay any attention to reality. The Republican response to the speech was a perfect example — he literally bashed the President for things that he explicitly contradicted just moments before.

No, Kathy, Obama didn’t lie. If you don’t want to read the health care bills, challenge someone to show you exactly where it says that illegal aliens would be covered. Personally, I would refer you to HR 3200 section 246, entitled “NO PAYMENTS FOR UNDOCUMENTED ALIENS”

Posted by Thom on 09/10/09 at 7:34 am

I’m sorry, I got it slightly wrong. Section 246 is titled “NO FEDERAL PAYMENT FOR UNDOCUMENTED ALIENS.” Check it out for yourself.

Posted by Thom on 09/10/09 at 7:43 am

    Jared,

The difference is that the attacks on Bush, which the media over and over again dismissed as nonsense spewed by un-Serious people, were true. Yes, there were a lot of knee-jerk accusations thrown around, and a lot of angry rhetoric that went too far. But most of those accusations have, even if just by coincidence, been vindicated, and those knee-jerk reactions were certainly justified given the administration’s history with the truth.

But we saw nothing like what we’re seeing now with Obama. I am one of the first to stand up and call out people for playing the race card, but I really cannot think of any other reason why people have been treating the President of the United States like this. No Congressional Democrat ever stood up and called any President a liar during an address like that. And he and the Democrats are accused over and over and over of doing things that are just demonstrably not true. There IS no provision giving healthcare to illegal aliens in any version of this bill. There just isn’t! If I’m wrong, please show me in the bill. For now, I’ll stick with Section 246 of the House bill, mentioned above, as the final word on it.

While you’re at it, point me toward the provisions for killing Sarah Palin’s baby and/or all old people.

    Some facts…

Steven A. Camarota is the Director of Research at the Center for Immigration Studies.

    ——————————————————————————–

Based on our analysis of Census Bureau data, we estimate that there are 6.6 million uninsured illegal immigrants in the United States who could be covered by the new health care reform bill (HR 3200). Even though HR 3200 states that illegal immigrants are not eligible for the proposed taxpayer-funded affordable premium credits, there is nothing in the bill to enforce this. An amendment was defeated in committee that would have required the use of the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program, used by almost all other means-tested programs of this kind.

    Among the findings:

•We estimate that there were 6.6 million illegal immigrants without health insurance in 2007 who had incomes below 400 percent of the poverty level, which is the income ceiling for the proposed affordable premium credits.

•If all uninsured illegal immigrants with incomes below 400 percent of poverty received the proposed credits, the estimated cost to the federal government would be $30.5 billion annually.

•We estimate the current cost of treating uninsured illegal immigrants at all levels of government to be $4.3 billion a year, primarily at emergency rooms and free clinics.

You do agree that if someone is going to command your respect as a man of inter=grity, they should at least be telling the truth right ?

I mean, if you’re going to call a man a liar he should be lying when you do it, right ?

Can you explain why Joe is a man of integrity for screaming ” you lie ” at a President of the United States from the well of the Congress when the President is speaking documented verified truth ?

Or are you just glad Joe screamed something at him and whether it’s true or not doesn’t mean anything to you ?

If you don’t have facts to support your argument, then you don’t have an argument.

If you make them up – like death panels – then you’re lying, Right ?

We are on the edge of this country blowing completely apart and people are concerned about parsing words. Progressive/Socialists (if you are offended by being referred to by the term Socialist, please tell us what aspect of the Socialism philosophy you disagree with) need to realize how dangerous your game plan is. When you abuse power in office by hiding behind the “we won and we are a Democracy, so we are going to do what ever we wish” mantra, you are traveling down a very dangerous road. If this is the way it is going to be, and damn the Republic, then that is fine. You should really take a moment to consider the group of Americans and their core values that you have declared war upon. If we have agreed that winner takes all, then knock yourself out. You will get one shot at this and then the door will forever slam shut upon the progressive movement. The Constitutionalists will seize power at the next elections and very quickly rip-out all of the central government and push this authority back down to the states. Everyone can live in the state that best adheres to their value system. The Congress will no longer be cramming the values of a few, down everyone else’s throats via the Federal Government. If you want to marry a Kangaroo, teach your children about Mao and tax yourself at 90%, then knock yourself out. Since only your state will be affected, no one else will care. When you change your mind(i.e. California), you will be in total control to update your state’s laws as you see fit. This was the original way the US worked and should be working today. The days of the elected few homogenizing the country is over. Please understand that if the choice is between more Socialism (has been creeping up for over a 100 years) and a very stern hand, you better learn how to duck and cover as Socialists, sorry I should have used the term “Progressives”. One more thing, none of you would accept your spouse telling you half the misrepresentations that Obama and the Leadership has been telling the citizenry. Why should we be expected to accept it from them when the fate of the country is at hand. Early next year you will see where we are heading financially under increased Socialism, at that time please reevaluate if this is how you really want to live. It is time to remove anyone from Congress who is more concerned with their party than with their constituents. Always remember, as much as he might fancy himself Lincoln, Obama isn’t.

    Badger,

It’s nice to know that there is a world out there that is completely black or white. Where socialism is bad and capitalism is good. A world where government intervention is always a bad thing and free markets are the answer to every problem. Next you’ll be telling me that the government that governs best is the one that governs least. I am sick and tired of you “all or nothing” sorts.
The purest form of capitalism collapses under the same weight that causes the collapse of the purest form of socialism. Both are dependent upon the good will of men but men cannot be trusted to always exhibit good will. Invariably, the system comes under control of men who act out of greed, pride, wrath or any or all of the rest of the deadly sins. The only difference between the two is whether the average individual is under the thumb of the government or private industry. I think you’d find that in most cases the common man wouldn’t know the difference since it feels about the same.
Both socialism and capitalism have caused immense suffering but neither are inherently bad. Each has its place in society. Now it is perfectly valid to argue that a socialized medical system wouldn’t operate as well or would cost more than a capitalist medical system. It is not valid, however, to argue that socialized medicine is bad because it is socialized. This circular reasoning does not hold up under any sort of scrutiny but the right is betting on the fact that their constituency is not up to any scrutiny at all.
This has been the crux of the argument for many on the right including Joe Wilson. He is among the ilk that play on the fears of the uneducated and uninformed by throwing around terms like “death panels” and spitting out the word “socialism” the same way Jews talk about the Nazis. This might sound like a familiar tactic because it used to be the stock in trade of the left; playing on the fears of minorities that were uneducated and uninformed. Now the left has become the party of the well reasoned argument while the right spreads lies and rumors in the interest of fear-mongering.
So argue against socialized medicine based on its merits. The left would welcome the chance to argue the point. But don’t try and tell me that socialized medicine is bad because the Russians were socialized and they were bad. It just doesn’t hold water.

I am constantly amazed at how hateful people have become in America.
All through the comments to this article people refer by name that they would probably be offended if someone called them such. I think it is time to face facts. We as a country are in trouble when we are unable to have a reasonable coversation without resorting to name calling. In case you are interested. In 1995 the Democrats/progressives/whatever booed and hissed at President Bush during his State of The Union address. I guess you missed that. This behavior has been going on entirely too long. We are more divided now than I can remember. The reason could be something just as simple is lack of respect for others as well as yourself. I hope that people will look at the facts themselves without relying on blogs and other peoples opinion to form there own. I read with interest the Holocaust survivor comment. Pay attention, while we are fighting over health care other forces in Government are at work. How about our schools, our children, where are the promised jobs, are we stimulated yet. Yes health care is in shambles. Who’s fault is it? I think the problem lies with every profit driven entity involved in the Health Care Industry. Getting along can be accomplished if you take time to use your ears more than your mouth.

According to his biography, Cong. Wilson was an Army National Guard officer, and retired with the rank of colonel. I am very disappointed in his behavior last evening, and would say two things: one, he may be a retired officer, but he is no gentleman, and two, as a colonel in the Army National Guard he would never, ever, put up with such boring behavior by any of his troops. His behavior reflects poorly on his family, his State, and the South Carolina Army National Guard. He should be ashamed.

Such moronic backing of an obvious Insurance Company rich politician. You’ll back the wrong horse until the end because you don’t like to be on the wrong team. This is America – Joe Wilson is looking after himself – not South Carolina. I could say the same about the GOP in KY where I grew up – they’re simple people, with “blind faith” which make them easy targets. Those of you championing Joe Wilson – won’t see any other opinion anyway, you can’t – the GOP have brainwashed the “true believers”, “Birthers” and NeoConRightWingExtremists into – the other party is the Devil – whooooo – boo! The GOP knows their constituents, people whom work more than they probably read and fear more in the farm land, because it’s all they know. Joe Wilson embarrassed S.C., he embarrassed America. – For those of you whom want to shout “Liar” – it would be nice if you waited for the person you are accusing to have the opportunity to “lie” before accusing them of it. If the President says something – that cannot possibly happen until a bill is passes – THEN is caught lying – Go for it. You know like – “We know they have Weapons of Mass Destruction, let’s go to war!” – If a bill hasn’t been passed, then no action by the President can be considered a LIE. I know there are some educated S.C.’s that understand this. The rest of you can go back to listening to BECK AND LIMBAUGH SPIN LIES that you WANT TO BELIEVE. I donated money to Mr. Wilson’s competitor and have e-mailed other “formerly” proud American’s. Joe Wilson embarrassed us all. Supporting him is moronic and just as insulting.

Mab – your party lost the election – you have your “regional” representation – in this case, a supposed “Jesus Camp Faith” Congressman – accuse the “elected” President a Liar – without proof to support his accusation (see my other post on WMDs). You have a right for civil discourse. Bush wouldn’t even allow dissenting voices to be heard (or near him).

Deborah – your party lost the election. How has he “lied since day one” – you’re not rationale – your irrational based on your bible group Jesus Camp upbringing – the government is NOT A RELIGION – it is an Administrative function. The rest of your comments are strictly BECK/LIMBAUGH BS. You probably should have paid attention in school – but instead, you’re being led by your “faith advisors” – not fact or history.

Badger – You too have your since of “history” from BECK/LIMBAUGH and Hannity – which of course is WRONG and Revisionist. We are not a Religious Zealot Republic – and the Propaganda that you have been brainwashed and supplied is by a party that “learned this craft” from WWII – Karl Rove, Dick Cheney and Bill Kristol – they are using the successful tactics of the Goebbles Propaganda to incite the ignforant few that would give them REICH WING power. You are an ignorant pawn playing into their game – the rest of America – isn’t as stupid as the 2MM views of Beck’s show. We are a country of 260MM – that audience (which is a high estimate) is less than 1% of our country – You ARE ALONE – BECK is wrong. While people have allegiance to their political party (almost as much as their religion) – the GOP has become a CULT of lies, hate and fear – the 3 key elements to fascism and Nazi Germany – now being applied by the GOP.

CDR and Will – You’re quoting from the GOP handbook of non-relevant information. Your “supposed” argument is “illegal immigrants. I wonder how many you really have in S.C. Would your argument be, “it’s because of the Jews” if you didn’t have this red-herring issue (i.e., if you’re an illegal immigrant, not only will you not get health care, but DEPORTED – morons – unless in our GOOD CHRISTIAN way, it was an emergency – I suspect). You’re posting the GOP time wasting red-herring issues such as Pro-choice (you know, the one where “you actually – have a choice!), gun control to dumb down your constituents. Well, dumbing down starts at the top in SC – Joe Wilson and I can’t remember the adulterers name….You know, the Governor with the hottie in Argentina…Hippocracy, thy name is Republican in S.C.

    Jim,

With all due respect — how would you presume to know my “party?” I abandoned my party in this election because they have melded with the other one for all practical purposes. No one takes a stand anymore. They just go with the herd.

Joe Wilson took a stand, whether he intended to or not. Mad Happens. And here, we have Kevin Cohen about an hour ago comparing him to one who would DARE shout down a pastor in church.

Excuse me — but Barack Obama is by no means anointed in any way, shape, or form. If it gets a little rowdy to wake people up, so be it.

Blah blah blah more fascism = socialism = Obama drivel.

First of all, I’m no holocaust survivor, but I am a scholar of German history. Admittedly, my focus is not on the twentieth century, and I’ve never done any real original research on Weimar or the Third Reich, but it’s hard to miss when you focus on that area.

I think one problem is a based on a big misunderstanding. A lot of people are aware that Nazi is short for Nationalsozialist which translates to “National Socialist.” And people are quick to point to the second word without taking note of the first (not to mention that the word had a different meaning to them). The Nazis were first and foremost a nationalist party. One of the founders, Anton Drexler, was a self-styled Middle Class Hero, who was quick to denounce Marxism and declare that he supported social welfare only insofar as it supported the middle class, and even then he meant only the Aryan middle class. Their avowed enemies from the beginning were Communists and Jews (specifically the mythical “international Jewry”), and any who aided or supported them.

Obama is not a Nazi by any definition of the word. Despite what certain media personalities keep implying, health care reform was not the defining hallmark of Hitler’s reign. Obama is not a nationalist, nor a racist. He is not interested, as the Nazis were, in creating a unified community of people of his race to the exclusion of all others. He is not preoccupied with the superiority of a particular race.

    To respond to Badger:
I am a Progressive but not a Socialist. Specifically, I am against:

    1. Any type of command economy.
    2. Abrupt nationalization of private assets or industries without compensation, and more generally nationalization without a clear social necessity (for instance, I was against Bush’s bank bailouts and Obama’s automaker bailouts)
    3. Abolition of merit-based compensation.
    4. The principle that no one should receive more than his particular need.
    5. The principle that it is the responsibility of those with more wealth to subsidize any level of lifestyle for others above a certain basic needs level.
    6. Any government controls on prices or wages (I support the goals of the minimum wage, but I think there are better ways).
    7. The principle that workers are entitled to ownership of means of production simply because they contribute to production.
    8. The principle that a nominally democratic government is always right and should never be questioned.
    9. The concept of a “dictatorship of the proletariat.”

That should get you started. People who think Obama is Hitler or Lenin know nothing about any of the three.

As a former officer in the south carolina national guard, one would think he would understand the chain of command and the respect that comes with it. This guy dodged the Vietnam war by joining the guard just like so many other privledged families did and his son has done the same. No dangerous combat assignments for this bunch. If you have never learned RESPECT, how can you earn it in return. Down with these scoundrals.

Here’s what we know about South Carolina:

    1) CongressmanJoe Wilson (can’t keep his mouth shut);
    2) Governor Sanford (can’t keep his pants on);
    3) Senator Strom Thurmond (racist that couldn’t keep his pants on);
    4) low ACT/SAT scores;
    5) gets more money from Washington than it sends in — a net leech on the federal budget; and
    6) Confederate flag flying over its Capitol.

Can we get South Carolina to secede again? The federal budget deficit will go down, national test score averages will go up and the silly 3rd world politicians it elects won’t be in our national news.

Listen, listen, listen. You can’t blame all of South Carolina for the outburst of this idiot. But you can blame the idiot and the idiot’s supporters like ADAM FOGLE. How stupid can you be Mr. FOGLE. No matter what your personal opinion of the President currently in office you still have to respect the office of the President. I think George “my best moment as President was catching a fish” Bush is a simple minded man to say the least but I still respected him when he was our President. I didn’t agree with anything that came out of his mouth nor understood 99% of it. Your idiot leader Mr. Wilson needs to do the same. There is a time and place to voice your displeasure and that was not the time. So Mr. FOGLE take your free “I’m with Wilson” t-shirts, soak them in water, and put them to your face and say “I’m with Wilson” 100 times.

I wonder why Joe just did not take off his shoe and throw it. If our children were ever to yell such a comment out at a teacher or principal, etc, they would be looking at expulsion. At the least, Joe should have to write “I will be respectful of the Office of the President” a few hundred times.

    Kathy S.,
Welcome to SC next year! Now go back where you came from. You will find we are a staunchly Republican (Not COMMUNIST) state. We are overrun with imports with unhappy home lives so they left their home states to move here. When they get here they complain loudly about how it was so much better where they came from (My questions is why did you move?). Stay in your state and make it better by worki,… Oh I forgot,…. I apologize. The work word scares most Communists. They like to tax the people that do work. You do know that our temperature during the summer is HOT!? We don’t have actual numbers on the thermometers here, just HOTTT and Nice. If you can’t stand heat, don’t come here- Better yet don’t come anyway. ROCK ON JOE! TED NUGENT FOR PRESIDENT!!!

  50. 50.

    Minnesota Tom,
Please feel free to take back all the Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, OhiAAAA (Yes I spelled it that way on purpose), New Jersey folks and all the other folks from up north who are flooding our backward redneck state and get them to move in with you where heaven has come down to earth. When should we expect you Tom? It seems as though everyone from above Virginia wants to come here. Enjoy your retirement shoveling out from under 10 feet of snow. GO JOE! TED NUGENT FOR PRESIDENT!

Will all of you Wilson supporters please explain why it was ok – from some of you even admirable – that Joe’s shout was itself a lie ?

Does Joe just think we’re all stupid enough to believe him just because his supporters appear to be ?

And Deborah, a real holocaust survivor would know more about history than you obviously do.

You guys have to use lying because there are few facts, if any to support your opinions.

  52. 52.

    Jim,
You ask the question,” How many illegals do you have there anyway?”. You won’t find them while you are vacationing at Myrtle Beach with all the other imports. You need to explore the areas where REAL (not imported) South Carolinians reside to find them. You will find them in droves. Visit any emergency room here at night. You will wait many hours in line. Guess who is in line in front of you? Really though, don’t come visit us. We have more than our share of imports- Northern and Southern.

    Minnesota Tom,

First of all, great name. I think you misspelled it though :)

Second of all, I wonder what you would think if I decided that just because a few silly politicans from Minnesota were running around out there (*cough*Bachmann*cough*), the state was not worth having in our union and encouraged you to secede. Probably much to Mr. Native SC’s surprise, I have roots in South Carolina that go back to the late 17th century. No one could possibly call me an “import.” My (n*great)-grandfather fought alongside Francis Marion in the Revolution, and unfortunately, you can find my family’s name signed on the Ordinance of Secession.

What I’m saying is that my whole family and its checkered history are tied up with this state and its history. I was born here, went to school and college here, met my wife here, and am raising my children here. For you to dismiss us as a worthless drain on America because of idiots like Wilson and Sanford and DeMint is unfair. There are 4.5 million people–4,500,000 Americans–in South Carolina. And just to update your information, there is no longer a Confederate flag flying over the Capitol, thanks to the efforts of SC progressives working with the NAACP to draw the public’s attention to it. (It is still on display on the State House grounds, which I find wholly appropriate. We cannot simply ignore our history.) Don’t forget that South Carolina is also the home of Jim Clyburn, the House’s majority whip (whom I had the pleasure of voting for in 2008 after relocating to his district).

Please don’t be so quick to judge and dismiss entire states full of people just because you don’t like the majority’s politics. It’s bad enough having people like Sanford, WIlson, DeMint, etc. running around embarrassing us without also feeling like the rest of the country wants to get rid of us. Equally obnoxious are people who say “I feel for you–get out of there as soon as you can!” This is my HOME.

Posted by Thom on 09/11/09 at 6:28 am

    Almost forgot…

    Jim, Native SC:
There are absolutely illegal immigrants in South Carolina. I have family members who work in construction in the Charleston area, and they say the number of them has been steadily growing in the past decade. Some of this I’m sure is exaggerated–people tend to assume anyone with a Latin American accent is illegal, and most of them aren’t–but the statistics confirm this as well.

Of course, these same people who rant on and on about how illegal aliens are the scourge of the health care system–because they only go to emergency rooms and rack up huge bills that the rest of us have to pay for–are steadfastly opposed to allowing them to buy insurance. What exactly are you advocating, Native SC? Allowing them to die? Doctors have to take an oath precluding that.

Rep. Joe Wilson need to be flogged and dragged by a horse. He is not only racist, but you are rude and ignorant. The least that can be done is to remove Wilson from the education committee. He would never have done anything like this publicly or otherwise to any other sitting president. He has been in politics long enough to know proper protocol. His apology is not sincere and it is nothing more than an attempt to pull your lips out of that back area that you sit on. I have no problem with him having a difference of opinion with President Obama, democrats, or anyone else that supports the current health reform proposal. However, he need to get a grip on his outbursts or his time as an over-priced politician (with unlimited healthcare paid for by the blood, sweat, and tears of taxpayers) is limited.

It was Joe Wilson’s responsibility as an American citizen to stand up and stall this bill.

By his actions, educated americans are beginning to question the motives of the democrats. Democrats are pushing this bill way too fast. A bill over 1000 pages should be studied front and back for months or even years before it should be passed. Is there something in the fine print that Obama doesn’t want anyone to catch before it is passed? The question will remain unanswered unless more people like Joe Wilson decide to exercise their rights and question this bill.

I think it is sad that more American citizens are concerned about social etiquette during a presidential speech rather than if our president is in fact lying about something. It seems pretty far-fetched for a respectable House Representative to say that the president is lying for no particular reason.

Plus, when Bush was making a congressional speech in 2004, no one seemed to care that the democrats repeatedly interrupted Bush with booing-Where’s the social etiquette there?
