The City of Myrtle Beach was all set to host the Atlantic Coast Conference baseball tournament from 2011-13, but learned Monday that concerns about the Confederate flag had caused the events to be moved.
The ACC decided to pull the plug and move the three events to North Carolina after the NAACP renewed complaints that South Carolina flies the battle flag on the Statehouse grounds.
The NCAA has a moratorium on awarding championship events to South Carolina because of the Confederate flag, although the presidents of ACC schools agreed in 2005 to hold such events in the state on a case by case basis, according to a statement from the ACC.
Steve Phillips, a spokesman for the ACC, said the conference thought all parties, including the NAACP, had been consulted prior to awarding the tournament to Myrtle Beach, but Phillips said there had been some miscommunication on that issue.
“Our baseball committee and institutional administrators awarded the championships to Myrtle Beach with the understanding that the event had the blessings of all parties within the state of South Carolina,” ACC Commissioner John Swofford said in a statement. “It has become clear this was not the case.”
Instead of the event being held at BB&T Coastal Field — home of the minor league Myrtle Beach Pelicans — it is going to be held in Greensboro, N.C., in 2012, where it is also being held next year, and will be in Durham, N.C., in 2011 and 2013, Phillips said. [Myrtle Beach Sun News]
It’s hard to say that no one saw this coming.
Even though pretty much everyone in South Carolina is happy with the compromise that moved the flag from atop the Statehouse dome to the Confederate memorial, the NAACP refuses to budge. Not an inch.
It’s kind of like when your girlfriend insists on playing her Britney Spears CD in the car. Every time you break the CD and throw it out the window, she seems to have another one.

The NCAA violates their own bylaws by discriminating against member institutions and athletes…and the ACC is following their lead.
Sue them.
Make them pay for their self-righteous PC crap.
