CLEMSON, USC GRADS COMBINE FOR 8 HITS, 6 RBI IN 16 AT-BATS
It was the highest-scoring game in California League history — a combined 51 runs between the High Desert Mavericks and the Lake Elsinore Storm.
And former South Carolina and Clemson stars James Darnell Brad Chalk did their part to lead the Storm to a 33-18 victory.
Darnell, who played third base at South Carolina, had four hits and three RBI in seven at-bats.
For his part, Chalk — who is from Spartanburg and played at Clemson before heading to the minor leagues — had four hits in an astounding nine at bats. He also drove in three runs including scoring twice himself.
The 51-run marathon was close to being the highest scoring game in minor league history.
According to minor league baseball historian Lloyd Johnson, the Mavericks-Storm game was bested by several other minor league games, including a 55-run game between St. Paul and Kansas City of the Western League in 1896.
The game did, however, top the most runs scored in a major league game. On Aug. 25, 1922, the Chicago Cubs notched a 26-23 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.
