GOVERNOR ATTEMPTS TO RETURN TO GOVERNING, WILL NOT RESIGN
A day after announcing that he would not resign as governor, Mark Sanford is hoping to put his marital infidelities and criticism over his five day disappearance to an end so he can continue with business as usual.
Sanford continued the process of returning to normalcy Monday as he chaired a state budget board meeting, his second such public event since returning from Argentina last Wednesday. Sanford previously apologized to officials at a cabinet meeting Friday.
The governor also reportedly met with John Rainey, the chairman of the state Board of Economic Advisors, for dinner Sunday evening. According to WIS reporter Judi Gatson, Rainey told Sanford “stop apologizing and continue governing.”
Sanford also picked up support from almost-First Daughter Meghan McCain, who wrote Monday that Sanford’s affair is a private matter and he should be forgiven.
“Above all, the Sanford scandal just makes me sad for my party,” wrote McCain, whose father was last year’s Republican presidential nominee. “The GOP is struggling right now to find anyone who looks to be our next leader. Going forward, I suggest that the party concentrate less on what goes on in the bedroom and more on what is going on in policy.”
But not everyone is excited about seeing Sanford return to business.
Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer’s coup to force Sanford out of office was busted Monday when the New York Times obtained an email from GOP strategist Chris LaCivita attempting to whip up calls for a resignation.
“André Bauer is my client; I’ve been working this since Monday,” wrote LaCivita. “I need to get this guy (Sanford) out.”
Bauer’s close political ally, State Sen. Jake Knotts (R-Lexington), has been leading the charge for an investigation of Sanford’s actions.

Rainey gave some good advice. I hope the Governor takes it.
They are not likely to force him to go, say, Mark, finish what you started.
Lord knows we don’t need Andre Bauer.
Meghan McCain?!?
She says, “The GOP is struggling right now…”
Exactly. And more so with her adopting it as spokeskid.
When You Vote Republican You Get Immorality
Newsvine.com… Sun Jun 28, 2009 9:41 PM EDT
Republicans never tire of making public displays of how concerned they are with America’s moral fabric while supporting their own adultery and fornication at the same time. This while they judge others, deny equal rights to gays, plunder America’s treasury on illegal wars, support torture and discriminate against anyone who does not agree with them. Americans been barraged with laws, programs, sermons, demagoguery, the religious right, right wing bigots and all sorts of moral demonization from a Republican political movement whose most powerful pundit is a multiple-times-divorced drug addict who flamboyantly cavorts around with a new girlfriend every few months.
The GOP harbors these deviants and why Americans seem oblivious in caring is beyond words! Americans get more upset over two men kissing in a movie than they do murder, rape or soliticious sexual affairs by Republicans. Perhaps it is their own self righteousness that dictates a gross misjudgment of immorality.
After all, even now that this conduct has been exposed, their instinct, all the way to the highest levels, is to excuse and defend those leaders and offer up the most disgusting defenses, all because preservation of their political power depends on it. This is not some bizarre aberration. This is how they operate and it is who they are.
Republicans and the religious right talk a lot about threats to marriage and families, especially when scaring Americans about gay people. They do this to control, manipulate and raise money in an obscene hypocritical manner; however these right-wingers have the market on breaking up families and marriages, creating orphaned children and hurting people and destroying the moral fabric in America.
The Republican Party nor the right-wing, religious right preachers who claim “family values,” and “pro-marriage” platforms in the context of their Party and their religion in order to propel themselves to power and who cannot remain faithful to their own families and churches, demonstrates the PURE hypocrisy of the right wing and the so called “Christian/Religious Right”.
I must admit I always get a good laugh out of witnessing another one of these “family values” type politicians getting caught with his pants down. I say if a man cheats on his wife, he will cheat on anyone, his wife, his children, his political Party, his church, his congregants and his country.
The truth is that on a personal level these solicitous sexual affairs are none of my business however when elected leaders, taking taxpayer money, stand on their soapboxes and judge others, when they condemn gays and deny equal rights to all Americans, when they destroy the lives of their families and their children, when they use their political power to deny rights and benefits to others and use taxpayer money for self-righteous and religious right agendas then it becomes my business, it becomes Americas’ business.
The LUV-GUV Lovenator Sanford had trade mission rendezvous
…after making a Freedom of Information Act request for documentation of Sanford’s expenses and those of his traveling party, POLITICO obtained several pages of receipts from the state’s Commerce Department, including a $2,310.91 bill from the Buenos Aires Hilton, where the delegation stayed for two nights.
Sanford spent an additional day and night in Buenos Aires before the rest of the delegates arrived, the Commerce Department revealed in a statement to POLITICO.
The trade mission, which Sanford led along with longtime friend and South Carolina Commerce Secretary Joe Taylor, included business development and trade meetings in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Buenos Aires, Argentina, between June 21 and June 28, 2008.
One week after its conclusion—on July 4—Sanford emailed his mistress, who has been identified by Argentine press as 43-year-old Maria Belen Shapur: “Know that I miss you. Unbeleivably (sic) hard to imagine it has been a week.”
That’s almost exactly the timeframe of the week-long trade mission, which included a delegation of about 30 South Carolina business and political leaders. Their agenda called for them to attend meetings in Sao Paulo before heading to Cordoba, Argentina, for a day of “personal time,” on June 24, then on to Buenos Aires on June 25 for more meetings.
Taylor’s spokeswoman Kara Borie in a statement issued Thursday afternoon confirmed that Sanford skipped the Cordoba leg and instead went straight to Buenos Aires “for official state meetings.”
The trade delegation “did not accompany the Governor to the meetings in Argentina,”

BENEFITS PAID TO TITLE II BENEFICIARIES WITH A CHILD-IN-CARE
AUDIT REPORT
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
We found that some beneficiaries who received child-in-care benefits were not entitled to the benefits paid to them. Although the Agency identified some of the incorrect payments before our audit, we estimated about $3.0 million went undetected. In addition, we estimate SSA will continue to incorrectly pay about $1.8 million over the next 12 months to beneficiaries no longer entitled to child-in-care benefits if the Agency does not take action. Therefore, we recommend that SSA:
1. Review the remaining cases in our two populations in which it appears the Title II beneficiaries do not have an eligible child in their care.
2. Remind employees of the proper procedures to follow when processing child-in-care benefit payments.
