STATE NEWSPAPER CALLS FOR INCREASE IN BOGUS TWITTER ACCOUNTS

The largest newspaper in South Carolina is summoning the creativity of its readers by asking them to, of all things, “create fake Twitter accounts that mock or satirize political figures.”

According to “The Buzz,” a section of The State newspaper which attempts to make light of current events, there simply aren’t enough of these bogus accounts to keep things interesting around here — especially when compared to other states.

Among The Buzz’s favorite is GovPerrysHair, inspired by the coif of the aforementioned Texas governor. From a location atop Rick Perry’s head, the hair has issued such thoughts as “Snug on the Governor’s pillow. Convenient the Governor leaves his Blackberry on for me while sleeping. Back to leading Texas tomorrow …” and “Hair looking good. Backlighting brings out the masculine sheen.”

South Carolina has its own pranksters, including SCLegislator, but The Buzz thinks we need other twittering political accessories.

Our suggestions? MarkSanfordsNavyBlazer and McConnellsCannon.

I must admit that I’ve never really had much use for “The Buzz,” but they really hit the nail on the head here. Or should I say they hit the Tweet on the hashtag.

In fact, I think I’m going to set up “TheState’sDwindlingReadership” and Tweet about all the fluffy feature stories they run instead of news about how Mayor Bob Coble and others have run Columbia into the ground with astronomical unemployment, unfathomable crime rates, and a failing economy. That’s funny, right?

Actually Adam Beam does a great job covering Columbia at http://metrodesk.thestateonline.com/

And the really amazing part is he doesn’t have to copy and paste from real articles or steal photos from members of the media.
