LOBBYIST WORKING TO GET CRONY IN SENATE POWER SLOT
A few days ago, The Palmetto Scoop was informed that lobbyist Warren Tompkins was working to put yet another one of his cronies in a position of power in the South Carolina Senate.
State Sen. Wes Hayes (R-York), TPS was told, was lobbying to get Tompkins shill George Ramsey into a “prominent position” within the Senate Ethics Committee. Ironically, that’s about the last place any of Tompkins’ ilk belong.
And today, local blog FITSNews ran with the story, saying that the move “raises proximity issues.”
Never mind that South Carolina taxpayers are already picking up a $70,000 annual tab for the part-time services of former Tompkins’ staffer Wesley Donehue, who currently double dips (from January to May, at least) as a staffer to the S.C. Senate “Republican” Caucus while running the Tompkins-fed “Under the Power Lines” political web development firm.
So, how much will taxpayers have to shell out so that yet another Tompkins operative can shill for his special interest clients?
Perhaps Sen. Hayes will be kind enough to tell us.
Hold on a second here.
This guy makes $70,000 a year (courtesy of taxpayers with real jobs) for five months of recording UStream videos and seven months of doing jack shat? And he gets to still work full time in his other businesses?
Are you frigging kidding me? No wonder he’s “living venti“… who wouldn’t be?
Anyway, I’m glad to see the State Senate handing over their operations to the man who helped destroy the GOP. Pure genius.

Maybe Wes Donehue can explain about his salary, or maybe he doesn’t want to b/c he doesn’t have to. But I can’t believe that his gross pay is $70k as Senate GOP Caucus Director. I am assuming that 70k includes budgeted expenses of the caucus office?
The grand puppet master, you got to hand it to him, get these guys off his payroll and to the tax payers of South Carolina. Props to you and FITS for busting out some sunshine. You won’t see this in The State, well not for a week or so if then…
Ramsey is a good guy and a hard worker. I can’t understand this Donehue kid who has never managed a campaign and has basically been the water boy for Tompkins and Terry Sullivan, getting a job with the senate GOP.
It’s understandable that Tompkins would want to get his kid a job with the caucus, but it’s not clear why the senate should allow it to happen. The water-boy for a consulting firm which will play in many House and Senate primaries this year is working for the caucus, and it’s a conflict of interest.
Also, Tompkins and Sullivan will be running campaigns for Congress this year and next. What if a Senator gets in the race against their guy? There certainly won’t be any incentive to have their kid work hard for that Senator.
Hmmm not like Quinn & Co. don’t try and get their tentacles into the legislature and that ever whiny sounding Lindsey Graham
Adam, you do plenty of shilling here on this blog for McMaster, Graham and others, so you might want to think about that before you go pointing fingers at others.
I’ve known George for years. He’s always been a hard worker, never afraid to push 24/7 to get things done, great to get along with and someone who would probably have a darn good career in the private sector, if he decided he was tired of the political world, where every job is a short-lived temp job.
Earl, go back to your blog that nobody reads.
Jobe — I read it. Go back to wherever people name people ‘Jobe.’
BTW Earl — hope you got my old flags for the disposal ceremony.
Re: a picture — still waiting for the perfect scowl from ‘the relative’ in vicinity of my new “Don’t Tread on Me Flag.”
Jobe – according to my traffic counts, a lot of people read it – including you, since you know it exists. How ’bout I rename you chickens … alad, since you just proved my point about gutless nameless types?
Mab – if they showed up today, I wasn’t at the office to receive them. I’ll be watching for them next week. Gotta be back in Columbia on Tuesday to help get our new Safety Director oriented. Was just there Thursday, and I’ll be back on June 1. This traveling was a lot more fun ten years ago!
Earl, people know you have a blog. They probably clicked on it one time when you linked to it from your comments on the relevant blogs in this state. However, your blog is about as widely read as the New Testament at a synagogue. You get 14 hits a day. Maybe. We all realize that no matter how few clicks you get, you will continue to huff and puff in irrelevance…and once in a blue moon remind us of the time you made a website in the 2002 gubernatorial primary (the impact of which you’ll exaggerate). Sit down. Shut up. Go home. You don’t know Republican politics in this state. You only think you do.
If Wes Hayes is good with it, I’m good with it. Hayes has always upheld the highest ethical standards of conduct, in my opinion, and in my observation of him.
I am embarrassed that Wes Hayes is my State Senator. The man is a big government RINO putz. He has been one of the big backers of raising our state cigarette tax to expand the welfare state. He overrides all of the governor’s spending vetoes. The man never saw wasteful spending that he didn’t approved of. He’s a carbon copy of what brought down the Republican Party in D.C. the last two election cycles.
Any efforts I made that helped elect Mark Sanford were regrettable youthful mistakes that I darn sure haven’t bragged about for years.
Might I add that website was used in the general election campaign, not primary, of 2002. Guess that shows how much you know, whoever you are.
Have a nice life, lurker.
