ATTORNEY GENERAL THREATENS POSSIBLE CRIMINAL PROSECUTION IF ILLEGAL CONTENT NOT REMOVED
South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster has a strict warning for Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster: Clean up your content or face possible criminal prosecution.
At a press conference Tuesday in Anderson, McMaster said the Internet classified website had 10 days to remove “the portions of the Internet site dedicated to South Carolina and its municipal regions which contain categories for and functions allowing for the solicitation of prostitution and the dissemination and posting of graphic pornographic material.”
McMaster sent a letter to the company saying that a failure to comply with his request would mean “the management of Craigslist may be subject to criminal investigation and prosecution.”
“I hope you will take immediate steps to end Craigslist from being used to facilitate harmful activities in
South Carolina,” McMaster wrote in the letter, addressed to Buckmaster. “[I]t appears that the management of Craigslist has knowingly allowed the site to be used for illegal and unlawful activity after warnings from law enforcement officials.”
Craigslist has recently come under heavy fire across the country following recent allegations that Boston medical student Philip Markoff used the exotic service section of the website to rob and murder women.
In November 2008, Craigslist entered into an agreement with 40 state attorneys general and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to put in place safeguards to combat unlawful activity and improve public safety on the website.
McMaster said the Markoff case, along with ongoing law enforcement efforts in South Carolina, indicates that Craigslist has not put in place sufficient safeguards in the last six months to prohibit the Internet site from being used as a vehicle to advertise or solicit prostitution.
What happened did McMaster arrange sex with a guy by mistake?
