LEADING CONSERVATIVE PAPER SAYS GOP SHOULDN’T FOLLOW SC SENATOR

America’s leading conservative newspaper Wednesday delivered a stimulus-sized smackdown to the South Carolina Senator who fancies himself the king of the small group of grandstanding obstructionists.

In an editorial criticizing Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter for leaving the Republican Party, the Wall Street Journal took a swipe at DeMint for being, as Brad Warthen calls him, an impractical ideologue.

Republicans shouldn’t follow [DeMint] and welcome Mr. Specter’s defection as an ideological cleansing. “I would rather have 30 Republicans in the Senate who really believe in principles of limited government, free markets, free people, than to have 60 that don’t have a set of beliefs,” Mr. DeMint said yesterday.

We believe in all of those things, but 30 Senate votes merely gets you the same fate as the 300 Spartans at Thermopylae, without the glory. A minority party that wants to become a majority needs convictions, but it also needs coalition builders.

This is the point I’ve been making for a while now about DeMint and Gov. Mark Sanford. They’re often right on most issues, but they posses zero ability to get anything done because they refuse to work with people.

Instead, every issue becomes an opportunity to get on television and complain. And their constituents end up getting screwed.

I think Specter was a coward for becoming a Democrat. Most Republicans do. But the fact that he left the GOP does little to help it.

And it’s good to see some strong conservatives like the folks at the WSJ finally start kicking DeMint’s soapbox out from underneath him.

Darlin Arlen wants a chairmanship of a committee so he can continue to obstruct Washington. Changing parties has nothing to do with ‘ being a democrat’, it’s about obstruction.
    *duh*

When the glitz and glamour of Obama mania fades and the American people who have been blinded by the lights begin to see how screwed we are, it will be people like Jim DeMint and Mark Sanford who will help lead the way home. The way to a richer and more fufilling America. Bash all you want but the writing is on the wall, but if the media doesn’t show it America will have to learn the hard way. Well what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger, and the conservative GOP movement ain’t dead. So what does that leave.
