MORE THAN A DOZEN SC POWERHOUSE POLITICOS VISITED CURRENT ISSUES CLASS
The fact that students in Kelly Payne’s Dutch Fork High School current issues class were able to draw some of the biggest names in South Carolina government to their classroom is simply astounding.
I can’t remember a single big-name politician that I got to meet in any High School class, let alone 15.
But if any group of students deserved a drop in from Attorney General Henry McMaster, House Speaker Bobby Harrell, Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom, State Rep. James Smith or the dozen other influential South Carolinians who made the trip to DFHS, it was those students.
I know because I too visited them, and it is rare to see such a talented group of young folks. It’s also great to know they are avid readers of The Palmetto Scoop… as everyone should be.
I thank them for that as well as the awesome “It Kids” t-shirt they sent me with the TPS url listed on the back (front here, back here). That alone makes the shirt priceless.
So, as they end their school year and some of them head off to college, I want to thank them for the opportunity to visit their classroom. And I want to wish them the best in whatever they do in the future.

I am going into broadcast journalism and I heard AP Senior Editor, Jim Davenport, speak to Ms. Payne’s class, he made the biggest impact on me.
Go J-Dav!!!
I am going to USC in the fall, and during my time in Current Events, my favorite speaker was Richard Eckstrom. He may not have been the most animated speaker, but he was interesting, and we all got a dime and the class got a jar of peanuts (it was a story about a person who went to Henry Ford for help, and got a dime, then she came back with the dime, and suprised him into helping out).
HENRY MCMASTER was an amazing speaker. He didn’t sugar coat the truth. He was real with the students and told us what was going on with the world. He told us about illegal dog fights and told us what the government was doing to prevent it. I am so happy with him. He was an amazing speaker.;
Love this Adam, great reporting! It almost brought tears to my eyes seeing McMaster’s name at the top of the “POWERHOUSE POLITICOS” list. Did you help make this in adult daycare?
My favorite out of all the speakers has to be Mr. Bo Barton. He was very interesting and interactive. He let the student voice there questions and answered them without making you feel like you asked the wrong questions. As he said, “Don’t look for the person who did it, don’t look in the back of the book.” What you have to do is you have to figure out what type of person; their profile.
Mr. Bo Barton was the SLED Profiler that visited- there are only 70 certified profilers in the WORLD!!!
I really enjoyed Mr. McMaster. He discussed things that were very informative to people my age and yonger. He discussed being safe online and that really made me take a second look at what I do and what I let my cousin do online since she is on there a lot. Thank you to all that visited and we would love to have everyone back again for the future classes at DFHS!
I too enjoyed Mr. McMaster. He was really able to relate well with all the students. He left a positive influence on all of us as did all of the speakers. They boosted our learning with interesting stories about life experiences, as well as information about the government. All of the speakers were really helpful and important to the students, which expanded learning relating to issues outside of the class.
As one of Mrs.Payne’s students, I have been amazed by the many speakers that she has brought to the classroom. These important politicians of South Carolina government have left a great impact on me. Bobby Harrel was one of the more interesting speakers because he had many great ideas on government. I was very impressed that he came to speak to our class during the very controversal time of his alleged retribution towards Rex Ballentine and Haley. He did not have to come, but I’m glad he did.
As a former student of Ms.Paynes, I always come back to Ms.Paynes class to hear speakers. My favorite speaker of them all though would have to be Nikki Haley. She is a mentor for young women, she never backs down from what she believes in, everyone can always see her in the community helping out. It makes me want to strive to be a better person.
i have listened to alot of speakers in the past, but the one who has influenced me the most is my former teacher Ms. Payne. Ms. Payne has got me involved with many diffrent projects through my high school career. She has tought me how important it is to get involved and to stand up for what i believe in. She has helped me out with so many things and i have meet so many amazing people through her. she is an amazing teacher

Obviously with the opportunity that Dr. Jim Rex gave us I enjoyed him coming to Mrs. Kelly Payne class very much. Still waiting on the class exchange though! But to the point, Richard Eckstrom is the MAN! His story of rags to riches and the cool looking peanuts along with kind heart that he has always shown me, Mr. Eckstrom is my favorite speaker so far.
Being in Ms. Payne’s current issues class last semester, I was only able to hear a few speakers. I heard Attorney General, Henry McMaster and Comptroller General, Richard Eckstrom. Both were great speakers but I really liked Mr. Eckstrom. He knew exactly what he was talking about and what point he wanted to get across. It’s good to know that we have somebody who can supervise the expenditure of all our State funds.
Although I haven’t gotten the chance to listen to many well-known politicos who’ve graced Ms. Kelly Payne’s Current Events Class with their presence, I HAVE had the chance to listen and participate in activities and speeches by both Dr. Rogers, as well as Mr. Bo Barton. Mr. Barton, the SC SLED Profiler, caught my interests the most. Learning of what he (one of the 70 criminal profilers in the world) does for a living was VERY educational. Before he spoke to us, I had no idea what a criminal profiler was, let alone what they did. The “It Kids” who participated had the chance to ‘profile’ a previously solved case, after learning the statistics and basics of most crimes. He was very knowledgeable and answered any questions we had, regardless of the answer. Thank you, Mr. Barton!
I am in Ms. Payne’s class and I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the speakers who have taken the time to speak to our class. My favorite speaker however was Mr. Bo Barton the criminal profiler from SLED. Even though I am a sophomore I have been thinking about going into that type of career because I am very interested in that field. Thank you Mr. Barton for coming to our class!
Taking Ms. Payne’s Current Issues class has been a crazy cool experience for me and my friends! My teacher reminds me of a Martin Luther leading a Reformation. You don’t always have to protest by picketing or marching, you can also write to representatives in government like we have on the issue of recorded voting. This is how I see it; The General Assembly is like the political power of the Church in the early 1500’s, the weak design of our Governor and unique role of our Budget and Control Board is like the German rulers who wanted to challenge the political power of the Church. They resented distant control; and new ideas were weakening the Church. Luther’s ideas spread throughout Germany because someone had Luther’s words printed and his ideas allowed people to think about and express their own dissatisfaction with the Church. Luther taught that people were free to make their own decisions about religion, and the peasants wanted more freedom. Charles V could not force the Protestant princes back into the Catholic Church even after defeating them in war b/c Luther’s ideas were too strong; the abuses in the Catholic Church caused people to lose faith. This is my take on politicians and their interpersonal relationships in general; some princes may have stayed loyal to the pope b/c it seemed the safest thing to do, others probably sincerely believed that the pope was God’s messenger and others may simply have wanted to align themselves with Charles V, who was strongly supportive of the pope. And BTW, this post is NOT an indulgence that will get me into heaven, AKA as an “A” in Current Issues.
I have never been in a current issues class but I am in Ms. Kelly Payne’s world history class. She gives us the option to come into her current issues class and watch the various interesting speakers she brings in. My absolute favorite was Dr. Rex. He was a very animated speaker and held my attention. I really was never into the government and politics till I came in here and listened to him. He definitely got me interested in what’s going on in our government.
I am not currently in Ms.Kelly Payne’s current issues class but I plan to take it next year. I think its really awesome what Ms.Payne is doing for her kids.I have come to visit for a few South Carolina politicians. I was most influenced by Mr.Henry McMaster. The issues that he brought up were very educational and it helps bring awareness to us because I have not heard a lot about the issues that he brought up.The internet issue really made me think different about it and I’m glad he informed us of that. He was a really good speaker and he kept me and the class very interested.
I was in Ms. Payne’s class last semester! It’s awesome that we had so many visitors and I thank everyone who came very much!
I enjoyed when Mrs. Gilda Cobb-Hunter came to Mrs. Payne’s class. Mrs. Gilda Cobb-Hunter was a very good speaker and never tired to go around the question she was asked. She is an advocate for Civil Rights. She also stood by her beliefs the entire time. I have tremendous respect for Mrs. Gilda Cobb-Hunter and wish her the best of luck.
I really enjoyed having Bo Barton come speak to our class. I watch crime shows all the time and really thought that it was cool I could see a real profiler tell us all how it worked. I have so much respect for people that can deal with those scenes and props to Payne for having all the connections to get these people in hear.
I am currently in Ms. Payne’s Current Issues class. I have really enjoyed all of the speakers that came to her class. But, out of all of them, my favorite would have to be Anton Gunn. I liked how he came to the class and didn’t really speak down to us. He spoke on our level and really inspired me because he didn’t get elected into office his first try but that didn’t stop him. He went out and worked hard to get elected the next time to vote by finding out what people wanted in his community and helped with President Obama’s campaign in SC and even declined his offer to travel with Obama and help him because he wanted to stay in SC and make it a better place. Thanks again to Anton and all the other speakers
Being in Ms.Payne’s class has been so much fun and a good experience. Hearing all the speakers who came in were really cool, the whole school would know about it, and the classroom would be filled with students. My favorite out of all of them was Anton Gunn, because he was similar to all the students and had a tough childhood, but grew up to be a strong individual. He was funny and knew how to grab our attention. Thanks so much to all the great speakers to came to the “Den of Payne!”
After listening to several of the speakers that have come to visit our class, I can say that they have all had interesting philosophies. I have learned a lot from each of them. My favorite; though, would have to be Chip Huggins. I really enjoyed his talk. He is a very friendly guy and he had a lot of interesting things to say.
I was in the class when most of the speakers came. They were all fantastic, but my favorite has got to be Bo Barton, the SLED Profiler. He was great. He talked all about his job and what he does, and we even got to profile a previously solved case. I thank all of the speakers that came to talk to us in our class.
I’ve enjoyed Mrs.Paynes current issues class a lot! We’ve had many speakers come to visit her class and its just been an amazing experience. My favorite speaker of them all would have to be criminal profiler Mr. Bo Barton. He intereacted with all of the students in the class and had everyone asking him questions. It was really fun to try to figure out the case he gave us to solve. Once again I’m very thankful for all of the speakers who took their time to come speak with us!
THANKS!!
I’m so proud to say that I am in Ms. Paynes Current Issues Class AND World History Class. (I am so lucky! I get to see her twice a day!) Our class is truly privledged to have such wonderful speakers come in and and talk to us. Without these speakers, we wouldn’t know what the REAL side of politics is like. I understand that our oppertunity has been so amazing and I am truly grateful to be in Ms. Payne’s Class. I want to say a huge thank you to all of the speakers who have come in to speak to us; they all are truely an inspiration in their own ways. Every single speaker had a different message to share with us and this semester has been awesome. Politics have always been a huge part of my life and having the speakers come in and talk to us has made it so much more real. To everyone who has taken the time out of their day to speak to a bunch of high schoolers: this experience has been so great for me and it really has inspired me in many ways so thank you.
Ms Payne is awesome, best TEACHER of all! Im lucky i had her. I REALLY got into her!! She made me work harder than i ever thought i cud (she taught me and my other sister). Best SPEAKER of all was sic willie, no question about that. I liked the blogger who came with Mr Mcmasters too. Go Ms Payne!! We love you.

The hard work and dedication that has come from Ms.Payne is showing in the classroom and outside of the classroom. The shirt that was made for the 2008-2009 school year shows the powerhouse of politicans that have came and visited Dutch Fork. It is because of the great work of Ms. Payne that it was made possible. Thanks Ms.Payne for making things happen when nobody else stood up
