CHALLENGER RAISES NEARLY $2,000 PER DAY, 2 WEEKS’ FUNDRAISING ALMOST TOTALS CONGRESSMAN’S 1ST QUARTER
A fifth term Republican Congressman who barely held on to his seat last year could be facing yet another serious challenge in 2010. Only this time, it’s from within his own party.
Carroll “Tumpy” Campbell III announced last month that he would challenge Henry Brown. And financial disclosure reports showed that, only days after that announcement, Campbell began raising money at the rate of nearly $2,000 per day.
“People are tired of business as usual in Washington and they want new leadership,” Campbell said. “The Tea Parties that took place all over the country last week are proof of that as is the overwhelming support for my candidacy.”
The reports filed Tuesday showed Brown raised $22,350 during the first quarter of 2009. Campbell, however, was able to rope in $21,650 in only two weeks.
That means that, with only a few days of receipts on record, Campbell raised almost as much as Brown did over an entire quarter.
Also of note was the fact that all of Brown’s donations came from out of state donors and special interest groups with one exception — former Congressman and current registered lobbyist John Napier of Pawley’s Island.
Brown raised the least amount of any Congressman in South Carolina despite barely edging out liberal Democrat Linda Ketner in 2008. And that could be another problem for Brown, as his $482,181 cash-on-hand is lower than at any point since taking office.

Its time for Ol’ Henry to hang it up
If Carroll the third is off to such a great start, why did he bail from the Charleson County convention when he was told he had to speak?
It’s pretty easy to raise 20k being the son of a former Gov. Hell if just your friends gave 1000 each, it wouldn’t take long. And I doubt after winning re-election in Nov, Henry has been in “campaign mode”. Tumpy should be able to easily raise 50-100k and then the hump gets harder, especially with the baggage he brings, which will be brutal.
That’s funny, I was at Charleston County Convention. I saw how many people were there supporting Henry Brown, and saw that Campbell boy duck and run when it was time to speak!!!!
Tim,
Really, its time for Henry to hang it up? Henry has a great voting record and is a true conservative which are qualities hard to find these days. What has Tumpy done, other than live off of his fathers name?
I was there and supporting Tumpy, he was not invited to speak at all.
Henry Brown is our republican workhorse and has done the job. And Carroll III needs to go back to what he does best- lobbying for Indian tribes.
Congressman Brown has been an enormous asset to the state of South Carolina. It is a little early to be counting him out for 2010. 2008 was a very unusual election cycle and I do not believe we will see as close of a race in 2010. Congressman Brown has not given us a reason to turn against him. Conservatives should get behind Congressman Brown. I have a great deal of respect for Carroll “Tumpy” Campbell III. However, I believe Brown is still the right man for the job.
the democrats might have come close in 2008, but they have awoken a sleeping giant in Henry Brown. This man is more energized than ever before.
Shealy is posting for his client for free. Must be for milking Ol’ Henry’s account for almost a million dollars last time. Looks like Henry Brown’s consultant is spending a lot of time writing one here. Poor ol’ Henry. Henry is being forced to go down in disgrace so Ol’ Rod can make a buck. The 1970’s are over boys….move aside
Sleeping Brown yes. Sleeping and sleepy. As everyone saw at the Tea Party people are fed up and tired of sitting back and watching these old guys just try to hold onto their job and do nothing. It is time for a revolution within the party. Brown barely won against someone he should have crushed because we are tired of old style politicians.
I was at the Charleston County Convention, where, unfortunately, I had to sit through Congressman Brown’s speech. I write unfortunately because his intelligence (or lack thereof) shined forth throughout his speech. As each sentence came out of his mouth, I was almost brought to laughter and/or tears that he actually represents us in Washington. It made me further desire real change, not Obama change, but real change to legitimate represntatives. We may have to wait 6 years to get rid of Lindsey but hopely time is running out for our great congressman.
While it is a given that a Republican will win that district, as long as it is either Henry Brown or Tumpy – or ANYONE else – except for that absolute whack job K. Jenerette.
Campbell is a bad deal for Horry and Georgetown Counties! With the prospects of a 7th district looming and Horry being the helm county; what real motivation would Campbell have of serving the upper portion of the 1st when he knows it’s gone in 2012 after re-districting? Two years down the drain for Horry and Georgetown should this guy prevail. At least with Brown those of us in Horry and Georgetown have had a congressman whose been responsive to us and has insured certain vital projects to our community such as, I-73 devolpment, beach renourishment, and storm water drainage have received adequate funding and attention. All lost with Campbell! Besides this guy has major baggage steming from his time on the ports authority where he was removed do due questionable behavior to say the least. If you think the Dems were tough on Brown in 2008; Just think about what they’ll do to Campbell in 2010 given his checkered past. They’ll run him into the ground! It’s obvious this guy is merely running on his dad’s name without that he wouldn’t be squat. He’s not even a native of the first. Hey Campbell, go back to Charleston or better yet Spartanburg! Horry has no use for you! Don’t waste you’re time here. By the way, most activist up here realize all of this; you’re not fooling anyone. A smart vote in 2010 for Horry and Georgetown is Brown.
I agree that Brown has to go. He voted for the AIG bailout before Bush let office and as soon as the inaugaration was over, government bailouts were a bad idea. In other words he was marching to the Bush drumbeat rather that the voter drumbeat. Vote this rascal out in 010. The items mentioned above are a classic example of a Rino Republican pork barrell spender at work. I say give Campbell or Jenerette a chance. I can see Jenerette going toe to toe with Pelosi and Hillary. Brown never has and Campbell won’t.
Where was Campbell during the Horry County Republican Convention? Answer: Not in Horry! Yep, Campbell snubbed Horry just like he’ll do if he’s elected. He knows the district is going to lose Horry and Georgetown so what does he do, he blows off both conventions! I guess Horry just isn’t that important to you, Mr. Tumpy or whatever your name is. However, Brown at least had a presence and was well represented with a speaker and literature. As for Campbell, he offered absolutely nothing. Campbell your arrogance is pervading! How could you consider yourself a viable candidate and completely ignore the party conventions in two of the largest counties in the first. The drill is so obvious with you, Campbell, the upper portion of the really doesn’t matter that much to you, does it? You’re a liability to Horry and Georgetown and that’s why you’ll lose the primary up here next June. Here’s an idea: head back home and run for the 4th at least you’re from there. You’re going to find out in June your dad’s name is not going to win this race for you.
As for Jenerette, she is a complete joke of a candidate. Why would Charleston or Berkley even consider voting for anyone from North Myrtle Beach? Talk about baggage; she definitely takes the cake here. She should concentrate a little more on her family and less on politics. Rest assured the Dems would definitely find some way to exploit some of the unfortunate events that have occurred in her family as of late in the general. As for standing up to Pelosi, I doubt very seriously she would even have the opportunity to do so. Like Campbell, as a freshman, she would be rendered completely impotent. I doubt the leadership would ever allow this looser to take the podium. One Question: Where was Jenerette during the Horry County Convention? Anywhere except HGTC! No support! No campaign! No nothing! If she can’t even make the county convention in her home county she doesn’t deserve to run. Word has it this girl actually worked for Brown at one time, of course, that speaks volumes about her loyalty. Hey Jenerette, your integrity is worth about as much as an empty turtle shell. Her campaign definitely needs some work too. Her website has the same lousy recycled montage she used during her last campaign. You’d think she could come up with something different. I guess this much is to be expected from someone who couldn’t even win a town council seat. Not much of an option here. Oh, just so you know people in Horry laugh whenever they hear your name.
Yeah! Vote status quo!
Tumpy Campbell does not stand a chance at this election. He is a total dead beat loser who thinks his dad’s credentials give him notariety and credibility…when he has NONE. This guy is so full of sh*t – just wait until u see the skeletons that come out of his closet. DO NOT VOTE FOR THIS LOSER.
