And this month, the Palmetto State’s January unemployment rate rose to an astounding 10.4 percent, giving us a jobless number second only to Michigan.

The number of unemployed in South Carolina is at 227,986, up more than 20,000 from December.

Allendale County was the hardest hit, recording a jobless rate of 23.4 percent. The lowest unemployment figure in South Carolina was 7.5 percent in Lexington County.
