POLL SHOWS 72 PERCENT OF SOUTH CAROLINIANS SUPPORT OFFSHORE OIL AND GAS EXPLORATION

The Citizens for Sound Conservation have released less-than-startling new numbers that show South Carolinians overwhelmingly support offshore oil drilling and exploration as part of the state’s overall energy plan.

The survey of 300 likely voters statewide showed that 72 percent endorse offshore drilling after being read both sides of the debate, with only 20 percent opposing the idea. The findings suggest that — despite a recent wave of low gas prices — the overall upward trend in cost as well as America’s dependence on foreign energy sources has made offshore drilling an attractive alternative.

“It’s well established that the United States imports two-thirds of our oil – much of it from countries that have no interest in seeing us prosper,” said CSC Board Member Cathy Novinger. “Add to that the four dollar per gallon gas that is still fresh in everybody’s mind and you have a broad consensus that more offshore energy exploration is a responsible thing to do.”

The 18 to 44 age group seemed to be most supportive at 78 percent, although the rest of the respondents weren’t very far behind. Race and income didn’t much matter either, as a majority of all demographic groups support offshore drilling

The CSC poll comes on the heels of a separate national poll that placed support for offshore drilling at 61 percent among Americans.

While I believe it is a mistake to base you future on oil, if South Carolinians want to risk destroying their tourism industry in order to have oil production that should be their decision. That said I hope the first derricks go up in front of IOP, Sullivan’s Island, Hilton Head, and Kiawah. Seems fair those should suffer first.

I also hope the state uses the Alaska/Sarah Palin model of Socializing the state’s oil resources and sharing the revenue among the citizens, instead of leasing the land to oil companies for pennies and letting them get all the profit. But with Sanford and the Reps in charge I am sure the latter method will be the way we go.

    Tradd,

There are about three or four words you can’t use on this site. Obviously, the “f” word is one of them.

If you can’t post a comment without using a different word, then don’t post here.
