SHERIFF SAYS INVESTIGATION OF OLYMPIC CHAMP DIDN’T TURN UP ENOUGH EVIDENCE
Although eight people were arrested in connection with the now-infamous photo of Olympic champion Michael Phelps allegedly smoking pot, the swimmer himself will not be charged with anything.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott — who grabbed international headlines by saying he would investigate Phelps’ activities while in South Carolina last year — today announced that, although the swimmer admitted to being pictured holding a bong at a Columbia house party, he will not be charged with marijuana possession.
Speaking now during a press conference at the Sheriff’s Department headquarters, Lott said his investigators couldn’t find enough evidence to charge anyone — including Phelps — who attended the party with any crime.
Lott had declined to say in recent days whether he would press charges, though legal observers interviewed by The State said charges were unlikely because Phelps was not caught by authorities committing a crime and that credible witness would be difficult to find, making a court case difficult to prove under South Carolina law. Thankfully this is over and Lott can now return to cracking down on the absurd amount of crime that continues to plague Columbia and Richland County. Although, this was a nice little reprieve from that and everyone got a chance to have their name in the paper and everything. But now it’s back to work, kiddies.
So what will happen to those kids he arrested because of Phelps?

He’s a young man who’s possibly made a few bad decisions in his life but has mostly been a highly-productive member of society. Hardly a punk.
I thought he was referring to the high sheriff. He’s certainly a fool, perhaps not a punk, but definitely a fool.
