DAWSON COMES WITHIN EIGHT VOTES OF BECOMING RNC CHAIR, CONSIDERING SCGOP REELECTION

He came, he saw, he almost conquered.

On the sixth and final ballot to select the next chairman of the Republican National Committee, South Carolina’s Katon Dawson came just eight votes short of pulling off an improbable upset. But the dream was too good to be true, as former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele took 91 of the 168 RNC member votes to Dawson’s 77.

It would have been only the second time that a South Carolinian headed the RNC. Lee Atwater served as RNC chairman from 1989-1991.

So what’s next for Dawson? Sources close to the chairman tell me that he is leaving all options open and considering running for reelection as state party chair.

“He is overwhelmed by the support he received from the state executive committee and members of the RNC,” the source said. “And he knows that there is still work to be done in South Carolina.”

Thank God that we got Steele and not Dawson. We averted a potential PR disaster. I know this is one SCGOP activist who hopes that Dawson retires and we get some new, forward-thinking blood as State Chair (and I certainly don’t mean Rick Beltram–he is cut from the same cloth as Dawson). Some names I have heard floated recently are Chad Walldorf or Glenn McCall – any of those would probably be a good choice.

    Adam:

    Your posting is well written.

I can tell you as a veteran of the State Executive Committee that Katon has been a fantastic Chairman.
I will support him in whatever decision that he makes as to his future.

    Rick Beltram

If Katon decides to seek re-election he will be a formidable candidate. He will most likely get a spirited challenge from Attorney and GOP activist Kevin Hall. Beltram may jump in but will not be successful.
Walldorf is popular among Sanfordites but may not have ever been involved in the SC GOP.

    J.A.F.R.I.N.O.

I’m glad Dawson was humiliated by the same sort of politics he’s guilty of: pandering to special interests.

In addition, any suck-up, neo-con, fascist pal of Lindsey Graham’s is an enemy of the citizens of this state and country!

    Workin’ Tommy C–
You’re a dolt if you think Dawson is a pal of Lindsey Graham. I’d also argue that finishing a close 2nd out of 5 candidates is hardly humiliating. Get a clue, moron or just shut up until you know what you’re talking about.

    Oh, my, Jenny!

Your personal attack against me adds SO very much to your argument. Keep it up–you’ll go places (at least the ones you deserve to go to).

    Have a wonderful day!
