MCMASTER, BARRETT ABOUT TO ANNOUNCE 2010 GUV CAMPAIGN, BEGIN ASSEMBLING STAFF
In the age of instant communication, it seems like elections have become unbearably long — even for those of us who love elections.
And the 2010 South Carolina governor’s race is no exception. Hell, I’ve probably written three or four dozen stories on it and nobody has even announced yet.
But it appears that is about to change, as The Greenville News reports both Attorney General Henry McMaster and Congressman Gresham Barrett are close to confirming that they will seek the state’s top executive office and have even started assembling staff.
Barrett, a fourth-term congressman from Westminster, said he’s hired a political consultant, Jim Dyke, as part of an effort to have “all the pieces in place to literally hit the ground running” once he makes his decision, which could come before summer.
McMaster, a former federal prosecutor and GOP chairman who was elected attorney general in 2002, said, “it is highly likely” he will enter the race, and “it won’t be long” before he makes an announcement.
Barrett said, “We have been moving around the state a little bit, and we’ve been receiving some very positive feedback about that possibility (running for governor). I’m not, at this point, ready to make any official announcement.”
Dyke, a Charleston communications expert and political consultant, couldn’t be reached for comment. He has served in the Bush administration and worked on four presidential campaigns.
Most recently, he was senior communications adviser to the Rudy Giuliani presidential campaign.
McMaster’s campaign team from previous elections included his strategist Richard Quinn, a Columbia consultant, and Trey Walker, a strategist in John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign and now chief executive assistant in the Attorney General’s Office.
I honestly didn’t think we’d ever get to this point. McMaster and Barrett have both done pretty much everything but say they’re running.
I figured I would see the South Carolina Gamecocks win a national football championship or man land on Pluto before these two would admit they want to be the next governor. I know there are campaign finance laws involved and all that, but as they said in Monty Python and the The Holy Grail, “GET ON WITH IT.”

Commenting on – “Get on with it’
Why McFogle wants them to “Get on with it”:
1) McFogle recieves more money from McCrook (McMaster)
2) People will view TPS more often bc everyone knows hes McCrooks blogger-boy
3) He will have the chance to smear legit contenders who would do a much better job than McCrookr
Each would make a fine Governor, not quite sure anyone of them need a name tag… Barrett is needed in Washington more than SC so we see this coming down to Henry and Andre and either would beat Dem candidate like a red headed step-child…
I do not think either of these men need to spend money to be Governor nor do they have a bat’s chance of winning.
Barrett has problems to face.
McMaster has explaining to do.
No one believes me yet but both of these gentlemen hurt me and my family beyond your wildest dreams and it’s gonna tumble out like a waterfall this year…….
We need HONEST POLITICIANS> are there any left?
Lou: Tell us the story. Can’t wait to hear how both of them got together to screw you somehow. Why do they not have a bats chance of winning as you say. You think a big liberal like James Smith will win. You may want to rethink that one. Sorry for your loss, but please explain. You cant say no one believes you when you have not told us yet.
I will believe you, Lou. About McMaster having explaining to do, anyway.
Barrett looks too much like a kid in a candy store — a nubie that hasn’t yet reached ‘journeyman’ status.
Actually, so does Andre. Though, I have seen in the Columbia paper that he likes to walk and drive and fly a lot. So do I, but you people would rue the day I became governor/ boss of the purse strings. You would all eat Ramen noodles 6 days a week for dinner — meat on Sunday — and LIKE it.
McMaster looks like the 19th century corpse Folks is talking about in his story about Merrill not running. ( He pinged over to you, Adam. Won’t you ping him back?)
Looks aren’t always deceiving. Sometimes things are EXACTLY as they appear to be.
Also about at least one of these gentlemen hurting you and your family beyond our wildest dreams. I would believe you on that too.
Fogle,
Please quit allowing this “lou” person (who also posts as “liz” somtimes) to post comments. Their grammar is comparable to a 3rd grader’s and their intelligence is somewhere around functionally retarded. I know that you’re trying to be fair, but please just ban them for the good of your website.
Well I will not believe another word until Lou or Liz comes clean. I want to see how Mcmaster AND Barrett ruined hisher life. Sounds like some body needs attention. Tell us Lou, or Liz.
