CONGRESSMAN WILL GIVE PAY RAISE TO CHARITY… NO WORD ON BILLIONS IN BAILOUT PORK
While millions of Americans are out of work at the height of one of the worst economic periods in U.S. history, Congress has decided that it deserves a pay raise for all that nothing they do on a regular basis.
Lawmakers voted to allow an automatic pay raise to take effect for this session which increased salaries by nearly $5,000. For Rep. Gresham Barrett though, this made for a wonderful opportunity to save a little face after flip-flopping all over the Congressional bailout bills.
Members of Congress are now slated to receive salaries of roughly $170,000 in 2009, up from not quite $140,000 ten years ago. Meanwhile, Barrett is making his opposition to the pay raise clear by giving all $4,700 of his salary increase to charity.
“I will continue to press for repeal of automatic pay raises, and this year I will be donating my salary increase to Anderson Interfaith Ministries,” Barrett said. “AIM is an organization made up of churches and individuals that provides assistance to the needy while guiding the people it serves to live independently within their own resources.” [Upstate Today]
Well, isn’t that just lovely. He’s going to give his extra cash to the starving children. But why stop here? What about some of the billions of dollars in pork that were stuffed into the previous bailout bills Barrett voted against, then for, then against again? Or, hell, how about giving away some of the rest of that posh Congressional salary?

One can see the McMaster pulit bureau is working overtime. It is a shame you would take a decent act and turn it into something political.
Adam – You mean the bailout bill that you backed whole heartedly?
due fairness to McFogle dont think he knew like me all the shiite that was packed in the bailouts
The debt we have taken on in the last year, and are about to take on, in the next will negatively alter this country for a generation. We have piled this debt on our children because the GOP is spineless…and the Dems don’t care about the future.
I can’t think of any republican running for governor that merits serious consideration…
After personally seeing to it that I have “none”, Barrett could have donated this money directly to me. He picked a group to share the 5 grand instead of remembering that I don’t have the money to buy my medications again this year due to the cover up associated with my TWO PAYING SOCIAL SECURITY ACCOUNTS. Barrett accepted a ” FRAUDULENT” Social Security Inspector General report, but the report was confirmed as fraud by Special Agent Roland Maye.
So the point is… Barrett does not feel guilty about everything. Stop giving him any credit. He assisted and allowed my entire life to be destroyed . He knows I am required to spend in excess of 5 grand for my meds in Medicare Part D and that 5 grand sure would have helped me and my family. If he has feelings, he should also feel very guilty about what he did to me and my family DIRECTLY>
He doesn’t deserve credit for BS stuff. He is seeking publicity. Scoop, if you’d tell my story, SC residents would be horrified at the abuse I’ve personally experienced from our Senators and Congressmen. They do not represent you any more than they represented me.
legend – if that is the case you were both too lazy to look for it
McFogle…….give it up.
report the news.
your complete inability to report the news might be the reason only 8 or 9 people read your dismal drivel.
McFailure will never be governor……Barrett will never be governor……Bauer will never be governor…..the real candidate has yet to announce intentions.
you are irrelevent
The right and consistent thing for “Bailout Barrett” to do would have been to return the pay raise to the treasury, instead of trying to score a cheap political point.
It’s the taxpayers money after all, not his.
SandMan has a definite point.
Once again…well, you all know this guy is the RQA ball polisher, so how about a counter-intuitive?
Where’s the story on the Attorney General (and soon-to-be gubernatorial candidate) and his membership in a country club that excludes blacks? Surely that rates up there on the hypocrisy scale with voting for the bailout and then donating your raise.
Hmm… I hope for your sake, Adam, that your job performance isn’t at all connected to the performance or credibility of this site. Things seem to be getting more and more… “out of control.”
Not many commenters ever seem convinced by your arguments, you’ve got a handful of alert people finding and pointing out discrepencies in your posts, everyone seems to be aware of your “discreet” bias towards RQ&A clients, and the general mood of the whole place is alot more “you’re wrong about this” than agreement or even tolerance.
Yes Barrett voted for the bad version of the bank bailout with all the pork. It was gonna pass anyway due to all the pork. The important thing that hindsight should be teaching us all right now is that all bailouts are scams to ripoff the taxpayers. $350 billion in TARP money has already been given out but the federal reserve and treasury won’t even tell the public who got all that money. We’re trading the few years of depression needed to clean up the economy for a few *decades* of ham-fisted government intervention, socialism, centralization, and stagnation. We’re going to end up just like or worse than Japan’s economy since the early 90’s.
Barrett is still batting better than 500 on these things, which is more than can be said about every other legislator in the whole state except DeMint, but we all know you can’t speak well of him because he’s not your client, he supported Romney, and he has a serious shot of taking a big chunk of power in the Republican party away from your faction.
Henry McMaster and Katon Dawson are probably racists. They represent old guard slow Southern Republicanism. On the other hand, people like Jim DeMint and Ken Blackwell represent conservative reform Republicanism that is the way forward and the key to winning for our party.
At least Andre Bauer does not spend his social time at some wonder bread whites only country club. His constituent service extends to blacks and working class whites who make up the majority of this state. And he had many black Dems supporting him for releection last time.
Aside from the bailout vote, Barrett has at least been a reliable conservative and an all-around good guy.
The only person in the mix, Democrat or Republican, who would be less of a trainwreck as governor than Henry McMaster is Tumpy Campbell.
The only reason to keep reading this blog is because The State “newspaper” syndicates it without fact checking it. Somebody has to stand up for truth.
elroy – McMaster is not a member of anything that “excludes blacks.” That’s a gross exaggeration of the facts.
As Katon Dawson has noted, the club had a charter that was essentially annulled during the civil rights era that wasn’t very inclusive. The reason no one noticed is because minority individuals play there regularly.
Saying that Forest Lakes members are somehow racists would be like me saying you’re a coke head because you supported Thomas Ravenel.
Bill A – I welcome dissenters. I find them far more interesting than people who mindlessly agree with me. I like a challenge, and I think the folks who disagree with me only add to the relevance of this site.
Nice comeback, Potsie. It took you a whole day to think that up?
“Bill A – I welcome dissenters. I find them far more interesting than people who mindlessly agree with me.”
What about dissenters who consistently point out your errors in fact, exaggerations, distortions, gross conflicts of interest….without any corrections or responses from you?
