A SPECTACULAR, EXPENSIVE NIGHT OF TENNIS, MUSIC

If you like tennis and washed-up grunge musicians, then boy have I got something for you.

Apparently, on Dec. 13, the Columbia Convention Visitors Bureau and Newberry College will sponsor “Rock n’ Racquets” at the Colonial Life Arena featuring former Bush lead singer Gavin Rossdale, two big name tennis players, and a couple of people I’ve never heard of.

America’s #1 player, Andy Roddick, is joined by 2008 US Open Champion Serena Williams as Newberry College presents Rock-N-Racquets at the Colonial Life Arena, home of the Gamecocks. The event benefits the Andy Roddick Foundation which aims to provide children in need with quality education and other necessary resources. These elite superstars will be joined by rising American, 6′9″ John Isner, and the WTA’s newest sensation, Caroline Wozniacki, currently ranked 12th in the world. The evening of aces will be complemented by music, high-energy and fun unlike any tennis event you’ve seen before.

I’m not sure how exactly this works. Do they play tennis while Rossdale sings or something? I don’t get it.

Tennis isn’t really my thing, but my curiosity is almost enough to compel me to go. Except, it’s pretty damn expensive — I even drew you an arrow in the banner picture pointing to the prices so you can see for yourself. Although, it’s for a good cause and it is the Christmas season, so whatever.

If I were them, though, and really wanted to raise some money for charity, I would turn the event into fireball tennis. I know I’m not alone in saying I would gladly pay $87 to see a couple games of that.
