LT. GOV. WILL NOT SEEK ANOTHER TERM

It’s higher office or bust for Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer. WSPA reported today that Bauer said he is still considering a run for governor in 2010, but if he chooses not to run, he is stepping out of the political arena.

In today’s interview, Bauer knows he has a challenge ahead to raise the funds for a run at the Governor’s Office, and he says he will make a final decision early next year. But Bauer went on the say that if he decides not to make a run for Governor, his political days are over for now.

Bauer says he would enter the private sector if he steps out of the political spotlight, and spend more time helping the elderly, something he says he has enjoyed doing during his 14 years in Columbia. Bauer went on to say that “politics should not be a life-long position”, and that he feels has has done much of what he had set out to do.

Bauer is also rumored to be eying the 5th Congressional District. He is one of a handful of folks reportedly interested in running for the seat if Rep. John Spratt is tapped to head the Office of Management and Budget.

Either way, today’s announcement will come as welcome news to former lt. gov. candidate Mike Campbell and others who are already weighing a bid at Bauer’s office.

I’ve heard Campbell, Ralph Norman and Catherine Ceips are running for Lt. Governor in the GOP Primary. I guess we’ll have a Democratic Lt. Governor in 2010…

Mike Campbell can’t run anyway, due to height requirements set by the State Elections Commission after Jim Hodges left office. (And good luck to Ralph Norman who got thumped in the 5th Congressional by John Spratt… and Catherine Ceips who should be spending time consoling her boyfriend during his pity-party protest for the House).

    Adam,

Can you explain how it is that Bauer could be a potential candidate for the 5th district. I was under the impression that his residency was either in Charleston or Columbia right now. I know that his former State Senate district reaches into the 5th district (Newberry County), but I thought when he represented that district he lived in Lexington County (in the 2nd district). Does he just go and establish residency somewhere in the 5th district in order to run there? What is the SC law about that? Thanks.

The flowing campaign funds are tightening and drying up. That makes running really hard……

Maybe he’ll join the NASCAR circuit, where he is obviously well qualified.

Bauer isn’t running for the 5th, Adam should quit making that up.
