STATE REP. FILES FORMAL PROTEST OVER 211 VOTE LOSS
Despite that sweet ride from last year’s Folly Beach Christmas Parade (likely paid for with taxpayer funds), Rep. Wallace Scarborough isn’t riding off into the sunset just yet.
FITSNews and the Indigo Journal are both reporting that the ousted “Republican” filed a formal protest today with the State Election Commission citing “voting irregularities” in his 211 vote loss to Anne Peterson-Hutto. That margin was outside the 1 percent requirement for an automatic recount.
Scarborough also alleged in his protest that “more than 700 illegal votes were cast” in the House District 115 election through a combination of individuals who no longer lived in the district, a few who voted at the wrong precinct, and the fact that the total number of votes recorded on James Island exceeded the number of voters who signed the poll book.
Because the number of questionable ballots were more than double the difference in total votes, Scarborough contended that there is more than enough evidence to cast doubt upon the results.
If the Election Commission finds in Scarborough’s favor, then they would likely hold a special election to determine the winner.
And without President-elect Barack Obama atop the ticket to turn out straight-ticket Democrats and minority voters, a special election in South Carolina should heavily favor the Republican. On paper, anyway.
Scarborough’s problem, as it was two years ago when he barely held his seat by less than 100 votes, is his horrendous record of screwing taxpayers and running around Columbia acting like a Democrat. So, even in a special election, it’s likely Hutto would probably hang on for a win.

He won by 40 votes last time against someone who identifies himself as a Green now. So now he is shocked he lost by 200 votes to a more mainstream candidate on Obama’s coattails? The under-trained octogenarian poll workers are most likely the same ones from last time. I think he is grasping at straws now. Wallace reminds me of a six year old throwing a tantrum; poor little Wally.
Here he comes, “Gun’s a blazen’”…again. How did that work for him last time? Anne Peterson-Hutto maybe more worthy of an opponent than umarmed power line worker’s responding to a storm.
