UPDATE: Post-debate statement from McCain-Palin 2008 Communications Director Jill Hazelbaker:
John McCain won tonight’s debate with strong, clear straight talk about setting a new direction for our country and fighting for working families. He outlined a specific, bold plan for creating jobs, helping those near retirement, keeping people in their homes, curbing spending, lowering health care costs and achieving energy independence. He vowed to fight for ‘Joe the Plumber’ every day he is President and he affirmed his belief that we shouldn’t raise taxes just to ’spread the wealth.’ While Barack Obama is measuring the drapes and campaigning against a man not even on the ballot, John McCain demonstrated that he has the experience, judgment, independence and courage to fight for every American.

UPDATE 2: McCain did something very important tonight: he built momentum for the final two-and-a-half weeks. While there wasn’t a slam-dunk killer moment, this debate was all McCain. It was by far his best performance yet and without a doubt Obama’s worst. McCain controlled the conversation, he stayed on offense and he forced Obama to respond rather than attack. Nothing better sums up why McCain dominated tonight than Drudge’s current lead, “JOE THE PLUMBER’S ELECTION,” after that particular voter in Ohio was mentioned a combined 22 times by the candidates. That story absolutely was the story from tonight’s debate and it’s a bad story for Obama. Americans don’t want to “redistribute” their wealth, they want to restore capitalism. But was tonight’s win enough for McCain? I think that answer will be determined by what he does with it during the sprint to November 4. McCain must take this accomplishment and build on it over the final 19 days.

UPDATE 3: Post-debate statement from South Carolina Republican Party Chairman Katon Dawson:
John McCain tonight made the strongest case yet for why we must elect him to be the next president. He was the only candidate on stage with the judgment and experience to lead America during this critical time in our history when people on Main Street are struggling. He conveyed a firm command of the important issues facing Americans and laid out the stark differences between himself and Senator Obama on economic security, energy security and national security. As a common-sense coalition builder who will work with Democrats and Republicans to fix the economy, John McCain will stabilize the markets, cut taxes, rein in government spending and create jobs. The choice is clear. In this “change” election, John McCain and Sarah Palin will end gridlock and change the way business is done in Washington.

McFogle your grinnin from ear to ear right now arnt you?
Did you just equate the words “restore capitalism” with McCain or Republicans? You must not have been paying attention the past month. Can you tell me with a straight face that using government money to buy up people’s mortgages or bad debt from banks is in any way a capitalist or fiscal conservative action?
I realize we’re having a hard time financially now, so perhaps some of these silly plans are actually needed. But don’t try to trumpet “capitalism” while you’re busy using taxpayer money to save or nationalize private businesses.
