HEAD COACH CANNED AFTER DISMAL START TO TIGERS’ SEASON

The Palmetto Scoop caught a lot of flak from sports fans for publishing reports over the last two weeks that Clemson University head football coach Tommy Bowden would fired. But we trusted our sources and today… vindication.

At a late morning news conference, officials announced that Bowden had been fired and assistant head coach Dabo Swinney would take over the team for the remainder of the season. The rare canning came midway through Bowden’s 10th season at Clemson, which has gone from a top-10 ranked team in August to a pathetic 3-3 record — including two straight conference losses — just six weeks later.

Bowden concludes his tenure at Clemson with a 72-45 record and eight appearances in bowl games.

Last December, Bowden agreed to a contract extension that was to have kept him at Clemson through 2014.

Bowden had been pursued by Arkansas to take over the head coaching job there. [WYFF]

A number of other blogs tried to jump the gun on today’s press conference and predict that Bowden would stay. They had a 50-50 shot, so what the hell, right?

Unfortunately for at least two of them, (uno y dos) that didn’t work out so well. Not that I’m bragging or anything… just letting you know that you can trust our sources (not that TPS hasn’t been wrong before).

UPDATE: Said quarterback Cullen Harper, “They just told us. It’s what he deserved.” Daaaaamn.

I liked Bowden, but I also can’t deny that something had to change to try to turn this season around. Maybe this was the best thing for the university to do.

So, he’s gone. And, as I Gamecock, it doesn’t matter to me – as long as we beat them.

That said, I can’t help but feel like it’s a shame – given the budget cuts that the State is getting ready to make. We’re facing less highway patrol and fewer teachers in our classrooms – but we pay this guy $4 Million because the football team is 3-3. The issue is worth thinking about.

Seems to me, they should also fire whoever it was that had the idea to give him that contract extension last year when he was “talking” with Arkansas.

I understand that Phil Fulmer might be available and he already likes the way Orange draws a vacuum.

Good luck Tommy. Enjoy your $4.5 million.

Imagine what Spurrier could do with that kind of talent?
