I think this is indicative of a trend we’ve seen over the last three or four decades where rational political discourse and the ability of people to reach out and work together is melting down. Both sides now rip their party’s bridge builders apart. Look at what Democrats have done to Lieberman and Republicans to Graham.

We see a new kind of hatred in our nation’s politics. Just listen to the emotion and choice of words of a Bush-hating partisan. There’s no respectful disagreement – just anger and hatred. They don’t care about the war, except to where it’s a policy of his they can disagree with. If he chose not to go, they’d likely find words just as hateful with which to criticize him.

If we lose our ability to talk with, and work, between both sides of the political aisle and stuff like this becomes more commonplace, God help this country.

“Republicans freed the slaves.” Only by accident along the course of consolodating federal power; if someone deserves credit it’s the Abolitionists.

An excerpt from Lincoln’s first inaugural address:
“I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so.”

Also, there is nothing “odd” about the York Democratic Chairman coming by to apologize. He is a gentleman and all the active York County Dems I’ve met are thoughtful, classy people.

I hope this kind of thing doesn’t happen again.

I’m sure if this incident of vandalism was aimed at a predominantly-black church, NAACP office, or Democratic Party office, you’d be a little more outraged. But you seem to think it’s as justifiable to attack Republicans as some people once felt it was to attack minorities.

I understand why it happened. Hate-filled and angry people who feel intimidated and lash out. Angry because they were promised something for nothing and offered a ticket to a free ride in life, only to have it blamed on Republicans when those things never materialized.

So long as bigoted mindsets like yours exist, it’s obvious we still have a long way to go in building a truly equal, civil and tolerant society.

Go ahead and put on the bedsheets and light a cross, because your words sound so much like a Jim Crow era Klucker that it’s hard to tell the difference.
