REX’S 2007 WINNER TURNED OUT TO BE A PEDOPHILE PRAYING ON A STUDENT
School superintendent Jim Rex couldn’t tell the difference between a condom and a hot air balloon. It’s a fact. Go check any encyclopedia.
So it’s once again not a surprise that the woman his failed administration named 2007 “Teacher of the Year” for a Lowcountry school was actually molesting one of her students. Way to go, Jim.
On Monday October 6th, Kanesa Hopkins plead guilty to charges of lewd acts with a minor under the age of 16.
Hopkins, who taught at Westview Middle School in Goose Creek, had been awarded the school’s “Teacher of the Year” title in 2007, her eighth year of teaching math at that public school.
The “lewd acts” guilty plea was a reduction, possibly bargained with the prosecutors, from the initial charge of criminal sexual conduct with a minor.
Hopkin’s victim was a then 14 year old female student. The child was in Kanesa Hopkin’s math class at Westview Middle School as well as a church Sunday school class taught by Hopkins.
Shockingly, despite some coverage at the time of the arrest in may of 2007, there have been no mainstream media reports on the plea three days later. [Voice for School Choice]
I think someone needs to give Rex the 2008 award for Dumb Ass of the Year. Then they should go ahead and make it retroactive to every year he’s been alive.
Runners up include the apologists who defend Rex and look the other way while South Carolina’s public schools continue to fall behind everywhere in the world except sub-Saharan Africa and only a few parts of Siberia.

I’m confused about you blaming this on Rex. Did these allegations come out before she was named teacher of the year? Is there any way he could have known about what she was doing if her fellow teachers, principal, and district superintendent didn’t know about it?
Couldn’t this have just as easily happened at a charter or private school?
I think the market crash is also Jim Rex’s fault. And global warming, child poverty, and genocide in Darfur.
Laying this at Rex’s door is like saying it’s George Bush’s fault whenever some Republican member of Congress is caught in a bathroom stall propositioning another man. That’s a shameless post.
Thanks Rob… I was wondering if Rex single handedly chooses the Teacher of the Year. I feel sure he does not and the choice is not reflective directly on him. Many of SC’s teachers have this problem. It reflects on society not the Superintendent of Education. That’s like saying Sanford is responsible for Ravenel’s cocaine problem.
