SC TROOPER ACQUITTED AFTER FOUR DAY TRIAL
After a brief trial lasting less than a week, a white South Carolina trooper was acquitted in federal court of violating the civil rights of a black man after hitting him with his cruiser.
Lance Cpl. Steven Garren insisted during his four-day trial that the crash was an accident and that he did not have enough time to react when the sprinting Marvin Grant cut in front of his patrol car on a dark, rural road last year. [...]
The jury saw the video of the June 2007 collision dozens of times. It shows Grant running from Garren’s patrol car, then suddenly cutting in front of it. Grant was hit and rolled off the hood. [...]
Black leaders in South Carolina reacted angrily to the decision from the jury of 10 whites and two blacks.
“This just goes to show us that justice isn’t blind and that Lady Justice’s scales are very unbalanced. To describe it as a miscarriage of justice is an understatement,” said state NAACP president Lonnie Randolph.[AP]
I think it’s a law or something that every time a black person goes to court and loses, the NAACP has to come out and publicly say that it was an injustice. It might actually be in the Constitution. Which is good, because we white people don’t have the ability to see past race, which means non-white people are always innocent and we’re always guilty.
As I said earlier this week, so what if the guy committed a crime, ran from the cops, then ran in front of the police car, and then got hit by said car? It’s society’s fault. Can’t we see he’s the real victim here?
