FEC REPORT SHOWS SCDP HAS LESS THAN $50K ON HAND, DUPLESSIS NOW ON STAFF
A complete combing-through of the latest monthly Federal Election Commission reports showed the South Carolina Democratic Party is having serious money woes.
According to an Aug. 31 filing, state Democrats had less than $50,000 cash-on-hand, despite being buoyed by a $10,000 personal contribution from First Congressional District candidate Linda Ketner. The campaign of Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama also gave them $500.
But in true Democrat fashion, most of the money was spent before it even had a chance to show up in their bank account. Chief among those expenditures were numerous “travel grants” to executive committee members as well as county party chairs.
And not surprisingly, it appears former State newspaper business reporter Jim DuPlessis, who was laid off in July, has landed a job at the SCDP. Although he is not listed on the SCDP website, DuPlessis was on the payroll, earning $2151.81 for the month of August.
The only thing less shocking than the SCDP hiring the ultra-liberal DuPlessis was Congressman Bob Inglis coming out… against drilling. I am, however, a bit taken back by the fact that it took them nearly a month to bring him on staff.

“Travel grants” … I kind of figured that when one served as a county chair or Exec Comm representative, they sort of volunteered for the role and didn’t mind the modest expense that came along with serving in such a role.
Or is “travel grant” a new term for “walking around money” … ?
The Obama campaign gave a measly $500?!? If that doesn’t say “we’re done with you”, I don’t know what does. That’s kind of like trying to pay a whore with a gumball and pocket change.
I don’t see the supposed $500 that Obama donated to the party- it’s not under “individual contributions” or “other committee contributions” on the FEC link you provided. Similarly, Linda Ketner is listed as having made two $1,000 personal contributions and one $5,000 contribution from her campaign to the party (not the $10,000 you claim). I must be confused- let me know where you got your numbers.
McCain isn’t on the list of contributors (either committee or individual) for the Republican Party, so if you’re Earl Capps, I guess that would be like running out of the brothel without paying. Not sure why presidential campaigns would be expected to give back their hard-raised dollars to state parties anyway.

The bigger story is where the Republicans get all their cash.
Rob, maybe so, but like a forgotten tip, it can be less insulting to not give anything than to give a token amount, because giving nothing could mean no harm was intended or it was believed a gratuity was not required.
All in all, I guess it could have been worse. One of the two, or both, could have done a Springer and sent a bad check?
Adam- thanks for the link. I stand corrected.
