NO, NOT USC… AUBURN BEATS MISS. ST. 3-2

You probably read that headline and thought I was talking about the University of South Carolina’s 14-7 loss Saturday to Georgia. But that wasn’t a bad game except that the referees were God-awful and the Gamecocks blew about five opportunities to tie the Bulldogs. The USC defense was great though and held the (soon-to-be-formerly) second ranked team in the country to 14 points.

The game I’m talking about pitted No. 9 Auburn against Mississippi State in another big SEC match up. Actually, it wasn’t really that “big” because the Tigers were expected to blow out the under-matched Bulldogs. But that didn’t happen. In fact, in four quarters of football, almost nothing happened… at all.

And when all was said and done, Auburn won 3 to 2. Yes, the Tigers kicked a field goal, the Bulldogs then got a safety and that was it. For the first time ever, the final of an SEC football game was 3 points to 2 points.

In the clip above you can see ESPN valiantly tried to get a full 90 second recap out of the game, there were really only only two highlights: the field goal and the safety. That’s it.

Other than that it was a bunch of sloppy turnovers and three-and-outs.

I honestly think they stopped playing games with 3 to 2 scores in the 1930s when they wore leather helmets, no pads, and there was a 50/50 chance of dying on the field. Unless this wasn’t a football game at all, in which case I bet Mississippi State really wishes they hadn’t stranded that runner on third in the eighth inning.
