AS POSSIBLE HURRICANE APPROACHES, STATE OFFICIALS RETURN
The Republican National Convention won’t end until late Thursday night, but with the threat of a hurricane possibly making landfall along South Carolina’s coast, state GOP officials are heading back early.
House Speaker Bobby Harrell told The State he will deliver South Carolina’s votes for U.S. Sen. John McCain tonight before flying back to Charleston tomorrow morning.
“I was looking forward to Sen. McCain’s speech and feeling the electricity,” Harrell said, but added he “would feel more comfortable” to get back to South Carolina.
The newspaper noted Gov. Mark Sanford has already left Minnesota, which is hosting the convention, and Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer is also preparing to leave.
The National Hurricane Center’s 5 p.m. Wednesday update projected Hanna, currently a tropical storm with sustained winds of 60 mph, to now make a landfall Saturday in North Carolina near Jacksonville.
