GOBACKTOOHIO.COM NOT POPULAR IN BUCKEYE STATE
In most parts of South Carolina, people recognize illegal immigration as a real problem. But there is one group of problematic undocumented aliens that is often overlooked: Ohioans.
So one South Carolinian set out to raise awareness about what he calls the “torrential deluge” of Ohio travelers who “stay far longer than the allotted welcome” by creating the website GoBacktoOhio.com (I’ve linked to them before but failed to show them the proper love they deserve).
The site has been up for a few years featuring directions home to Ohio, theories as to why there are so many Ohioans in South Carolina, and even a CafePress store with a few popular bumper stickers.
Best of all, though, is a “theme song” by Charleston-based “Live Oak Jams“: [audio:http://gobacktoohio.com/wp-content/uploads/other/Ohio.mp3]
The site even teamed up with the Charleston RiverDogs baseball team in June to host a “Go Back to Ohio Night” (picture above). No joke.
So you can probably guess how this has gone over with folks in Ohio. Not very well.
Dispatch reader Chris Paparodis of Hilliard, who vacations each summer at Seabrook Island near Charleston, said he began noticing GoBackToOhio.com bumper stickers last year.
Paparodis thought the Web site was just a joke, but as time passed, he began to see more of the bumper stickers. (The Web site claims to have distributed more than 1,000 bumper stickers.) Finally, Paparodis checked out the Web site, which he found to be “sophisticated in design and poisonous in content.” [...]
I thought I’d call the Web site’s founder, South Carolinian Rusty Shackleford, and ask a few questions about the site, which has been up for a couple of years.

I love that this guy thinks “Rusty Shackleford” is the guy’s real name. Apparently, he doesn’t watch much King of the Hill. Of course, I guess it could be his real name — there was Vandaral “Rusty” Shackleford who almost played for South Carolina.
Better than that, I like that the writer — from Ohio — feels the need to throw in the “What the heck can be so pressing in South Carolina? A mess of chitlins that need fixin’?” dig just to prove “Mr. Shackleford” and other anti-Ohioans right.

Once again, BINGO on a great post, Adam. I know quite a few folks here from Ohio. There is a reason they are leaving the state. There is also a reason they all want to come to South Carolina. I’m cool with them. My mom lived in Ohio for a year, and after hearing about Ohio from her, I can understand why they are heading for SC in droves. The school system in Dayton actually cancelled bus service for all schools the year she lived there. I went to visit them and school-aged kids were WALKING ALONG THE INTERSTATE on the way to school. I couldn’t believe it. Make all the school jokes you want about South Carolina, but at least we bus the kids to school (even if occasionally the bus catches fire.) I like most of the folks from Ohio, but like you pointed out, the remarks like the “chitlins” remark above prove the point that some folks are better left in Ohio. It is ironic he chose “chitlins” to comment on. As the wikipedia on chitlins puts it, “”Chitlins” are eaten with more frequency in Black culture, and the South, perhaps due to their heritage as soul food.” I sure hope this fella doesn’t have a problem with folks of different cultures. Who knows?
people from ohio are loudmouthed, rude, obnoxious, fat, and smelly. We dont want them corrupting our state, so pack up yer bags and get the $%&* out of my beloved state!!!!

Thank god someone created this website. An entire state of obnoxious idiots moving to S. Carolina cannot be tolerated any longer. Ohio is the only state in the nation that the census bureau projects to lose population in the next 15 years. That speaks volumes about the people, culture, economy, etc. related to Ohio. Thankfully, Ohioans are so offended by the presence of this website that it gets a ton of free publicity. One can only hope that they will find another state to infiltrate and leave us to our ways before they invaded with minivans and tank tops.

I’ve lived in South Carolina for about a decade. Hopefully, I will be leaving it soon.
A state filled with strip malls, mega churches, big box stores, and the kind of people who
appreciate such things. Arrogant, ill-mannered, ignorant people driving SUV’s, while sucking down lattes. The favorite pastime is shopping at previously mentioned big box stores.
The men are milque toast posers who think golf is actually a sport.
The women have the morals of a Shanghai strumpet, and are ugly AND stupid.
At one time I bought into the ideal of the New South, peddled to Northerners by glossy Chamber of Commerce brochures. It’s all just marketing. The New South, is the same old hate-filled, bigoted South, with a smile painted over its sneering face.
The South HAS given me a gift which I cherish. A renewed appreciation for my own homeland, and a reverence for my own heritage.
Hell Yeah…Northern Pride world wide.

Napoo…The ignorance of the average Southron bovine, to the geographic and cultural diversity of this great nation, never ceases to amuse me. We don’t have ‘guidos’ (whatever the hell that is) in the Appalachian highlands of central Pennsylvania. Just endless mountains, forests, farm fields, and genuine country folk.
The economy is a bit soft, but it’s a fair trade.
Besides, there’s a good chance I will move back to Colorado. There aren’t any guidos there either. Just cool cities, awesome scenery, and good-hearted Mid-western Americans, with genuine values.
I’ll never forget the day I took the Colorado tags off my car, and replaced them with the tacky SC ‘ smiling faces friendly places’ advertisement. I cried real tears that day, and lost a part of my soul.

I think Northern and Western states should put a ban on Southerners visiting or residing in our states.

Every year thousands of slack-jawed Southrons visit Gettysburg, to commemorate the defeat their degenerate ancestors received, at the hands of better men. The Commonwealth and the town of Gettysburg, have been very gracious to the descendants of our former invader. Perhaps it’s time to rethink that policy.

As far as the rest of what makes up the state of South Carolina?
Let’s start with your history… high point was your participation in the Revolution. The rest of your history is a steaming loaf of shame and disgrace, that can be summed up in three words…slavery, treason, and Strom Thurmond.
Culture?…what culture?
People? As a group… the most mean-spirited, arrogant, ignorant, and poorly mannered miscreants I’ve ever encountered in one place…and that’s just the educated folk. If South Carolina’s people could be personified by a dog, it would have to be an over-bred toy poodle. The incessant barking, snapping, and pissing on your leg, is very similar. At least a toy poodle is cute. Can’t say as much for South Carolinians.
Your defense of Go Back to Ohio is a good example of what I’m talking about.
I’ve visited Ohio. It’s a pretty state, and the people I encountered were a helluva lot more polite, and down home, than the posers in South Carolina. Urban areas aside, New Jersey isn’t bad either.
Hmmm…I corrected a South Carolinian in Pennsylvania who asked me…’what’s the name of that lake?’. That lake was the Susquehanna river. Southerners in Colorado are even more amusing. Especially when they go hiking in the Rockies without a warm jacket, in June. They’re easy prey for the Coyotes and Mountain Lions, so they do serve a purpose.’

You know…a fair number of Ohioans ( and other ‘Yankees’) have lost their lives in Afghanistan and Iraq, over the past few years. I seem to recall five members from one Ohio National Guard Unit, dying in a single day, as the result of an ambush. Because of people like them, dirt bags get to exercise freedom of speech, here in the states. I can’t help but wonder how one of their family members would feel, if they ran across Go Back to Ohio dot com.
I’m sure that is a question that is beyond the understanding of the average South Carolinian.

Plenty of South Carolinian’s haven’t given their lives for their country in those wars. I complain about the same things and the same people. The big box stores did not originate in our state and Western Penn and other states are certainly not immune to them, either.
As for the people, the ones you describe are more than likely transplants themselves of which we have WAAAYYY too many: especially retired military officer Yankees. If they drive an SUV AND drink a latte, they sound like Yankee transplant yuppies to me. If you are describing your experiences in Charleston, Myrtle Beach, or Columbia, those areas are chock full of arrogant Yankee transplants.
As for the women, there ain’t none finer than down in the South. I’m from Alabama where THE most beautiful women in the world live but in the South generally, 90% of the 20-30 year old women are very beautiful to at least passing. When I went up to NJ for a couple of months my observation was that only 10% of the women in that age range were very beautiful to at least passing. With 90% of them I’d have thrown a bone in one direction and run off in the opposite.
Yankee women talk through their noses (hence the term “honky”) and are abrasive, loud, and not lady-like in the least. Southern women are generally very sweet and polite with voices that can curl a man around their little fingers.
The Yankee men are either arrogant louts who talk as though they have an IQ (at the highest) in the mildly retarded range or they talk through their noses and sound about as whiny and effeminate as the Yankee women. REAL MEN talk with a SOUTHERN accent! (And don’t bring up Lindsey Graham as a counter-example–even she knows that she talks like a woman!)
BTW: Western Pennsylvania, the place that eastern Penn folks describe as being full of “rednecks” has a population mostly made up of the Scots-Irish and Lowland Deutsch mix who didn’t have enough gumption and sense to move to a warmer climate. In other words, y’all were left behind by our ancestors a looooong time ago!
In any case, please denigrate us all you like and pretend that you don’t do it anyways. We know what y’all are like and we know what we’re like and we prefer our own company, thank you very much!
Tommy says it right, Starbucks didn’t come to SC because Southerners brought it home, it’s because Northerners brought it with them.
And I’d have to agree totally with relation to Southern men and women vs Northern. Yes, I’ve been to CO and AZ and further west and north, and I still have to agree with that statement.
That said, I think Northerners are mostly friendly. I just don’t think they realize that what they’re doing and saying is really rude. Northerners are rude with a smile, they sugar it up and hold a grudge. Southerners tell you the doggone truth how it is, but still like you afterwards.
Now, if we could just get rid of all the mess Northerners have left (mill villages for example) and clean it up (take the project in Glendale, SC for example) and get rid of the ignorant in-it-for-themselves Northerners who come to govern our great lands, we’d be well off.

Those experiences took me from being an ardent admirer of the South, to understanding its people and culture, for who and what they really are. Conclusion…you are definitely a separate people. I don’t think someone can be born in the South, and call themselves a true American. The South is more like an American version of Palestine, or the Balkans. As a people, you simply don’t get this country, or what it’s supposed to be, and never have. The South is nothing but a continuation of Old Europe, without the charm or accomplishment.

The three main big box retailers are SOUTHERN companies. Vermont…that most “Yankee” of states, is also one of the most rural, with one of the fewest concentrations of big box retailers.
I’ve met a number of women (a couple of them from Texas!) who agree with my assessments about the fresh, un-masculine habits of the Southern male. Those gals from Texas also agreed with me on one important point…real men don’t come from places that refer to chicken as barbecue.
The people who stayed in Central and Western Pennsylvania helped build the Commonwealth into one the nation’s most successful states. The ones who emigrated South couldn’t cut the muster, so they ran off, and devolved into an embarrassment to Anglo/Celtic peoples…worldwide.

Your assessment is nothing but a flip flop of Southern/Northern character traits. Anyone who has lived in the South longer than a couple of years, has figured out that Southerners’ polite manners are only surface deep…which really isn’t being polite, at all.
Mill Villages are cool. They were places where real people lived, worked, and contributed something positive to the economy. I’m sure (like a typical South Carolinian) you’d rather see them torn down, and ‘gentrified’ into some souless, gated community, populated by more SUV-driving, megachurch-attending,

I have been carousing several “I hate ohio” sites put on by individuals who reside in SC, hoping that someone could properly represent an intelligent northerner. I personally would never hate someone because they originate from a certain state. For goodness sake this is America, the melting pot of the world!

Typically it is the not-so-clever minded folk who get sucked into these vicious displays of holier than thou behavior which certainly does not help our cause. Ignorance breeds hate, I have always believed that.
I have only been to South Carolina a handful of times, for the most part avoiding the tourist traps. I have never experienced a hostile person and some of my favorite memories belong to the state. I can understand that perhaps these hostile people are simply afraid of growing and changing, because let’s face it change can be scary! I just wish the aggression would only appear on a case to case basis. What a shame to disgrace such a beautiful state with so much ignorance and hate.

In Ohio, there are people who seem to hold alot of grudges and backstab, at least in the south, they will tell you, and move on.
Working environment is alot better there than it is in Ohio, I don’t know about any other northern states. The further north you go the ruder the people are.
It is sad and disgusting to see grown adults act so childish. Perhaps those posting such hate weren’t raised with good morals or manners, I have no idea. I was raised to believe we are all equal and to respect other peoples property, beliefs, & ideas.

I have been told I have acquired the title of “Damn Yankee” because I visited and stayed. Doesn’t bother me. The childrens rhyme “sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me” fits well with me.
I help my neighbors, friends, co-workers, and people I don’t even know when I can. That is the way I was raised, that is the way I am raising my children, who are termed Southerners.

This websight really says a lot. Im from upstate NY and lived in Va for about 11 years on and off. I can say from experience there is a genuine hate for Northerners. Funny part is none of them have ever lived anywhere besides VA. How can you dislike something so much that you have never even experienced? In Va they keep to themselves and no matter how hard you try they refuse to give you a chance. As a christian I was mortified at how rude locals were even rude in church.In Va they are fake, nicey nice to your face, cold, rude, nasty, mean spirited and hateful. I have known southerners who move up North and love it. Why dont Northerners treat Southerners like crap when they come up? Ill tell you for the most part Southerners are skiddish and never leave their home towns. They are dull and very unadenturous. All the bullcrap you hear about southern hospitality is a damn lie. You are correct, life is too short to be pissed off all of the time.
However, years of enduring subtle, condescending insults about your homeland & your people, delivered with a fake smile, and arrogant manner, tends to fray your tolerance.
I will respectfully submit that one has to live in the South, and learn its history, to truly understand the vicious nature of its culture. As I’ve said, you have to let the mask of charm burn away, to see its true face. Lisa’s post is dead on in its accuracy, and I’ve heard that same story from people who moved to SC, from states as ‘down home’ as MO, SD, KS, and WV.
There’s simply no excuse for the support, and appreciation for such attitudes, and the websites that promote them, but here they are.

I’ve traveled all over the country and seen all kinds of folks. I can say without hesistation that there are good golks and buttheads everywhere you go. I would not begrudge northerners from coming here to spend their money during vacation or even to live. There are a few places up north that I’d like to show my family. Let PatriciaB have her say. We are all human, we are all adults (at least act like it please) and we all go through life with the same problems and perils. I’d like to point out that God made sure Interstate routes 77 and 95 have an equal number of northbound lanes. If you are not happy here, please accept these gifts from God by taking these lanes northbound.
The rest of you who like it here will need to do a better job of fitting in. You can start by adjusting your diets to include grits and BBQ of the mustard or vinegar variety (many of you seem like your hot dogs with lots of mustard, so this adjustment shouldn’t be too hard) … and for pete’s sake, learn to speak proper Southern!

The way I see it. If they want to be treated like real Americans, they should damn well live up to the ideal. Until they do, they should be treated as nothing more than a redneck version of La Raza, or Aztlan.
I seem to recall a former president (Truman I believe, saying that he had no use for hyphenated Americans. He was referring to foreigners who immigrate here. Well, that should go double for people who were fortunate enough to be born here.

Southerners who have a problem with people exercising their right to live where they choose, within their own country, are free to make use of that institution. The former Yugoslavia, or Northern Ireland are about right. I’m sure Southerners will feel right at home.

Ever since I was young I have visited the Lowcountry on a yearly basis. “Charleston”, “Kiawah”, “Seabrook”, and “Folly” have become terms very familiar with my family, a second home. My first being, Ohio, of course.
Every year we came back to the harbor to feel the ocean breeze, walk the plantations, drink sweet tea (my favorite part), and break bread at the finest seafood restaurants in the South. My family loves Charleston, and holds its history and traditions in the highest regard.
Upon a recent visit to the Charleston area, my parents (out stimulating the economy, as is the usual practice of our vacations on the coast) noticed a bumper sticker produced to advertise your website. They of course noticed the mention of Ohio, and excitedly looked it up on the internet…only to find the harsh words of which you spoke against Ohio and our “kind”.
This left many of us disappointed. It seems to me that the term “Southern Hospitality” is thrown around too much these days. The term was originally given in order to reflect the feeling of “welcome” and “comfort” one receives from visiting the South. After visiting your website, I can’t help but wonder why you Ohio-hating Southerners even consider yourselves in the least bit “hospitable”.
The blogs posted on your site that support your antics, speak over and over about how the Charleston community needs to go back to its traditional ways. I am probably not the first to suggest to you that this website isn’t a step in the right direction. Perhaps you should try that old time Southern Hospitality.
Coastal cities in the United States thrive on tourism, and unfortunately for you “natives”, Charleston is no exception. Therefore, your website and its Buckeye-despising junkies are simply biting the hand that feeds you (and your families). The statistics are there.
My family continues to visit the Lowcountry as always, and continues to stimulate your economy. Our visits are no different than before. We simply go to experience the community of Charleston as a whole, and as it turns out, there are still hospitable natives that don’t mind to see us there. And by the sound of it, they don’t take pride in the existence of your “organization”. One even told us that your website is “a stain in the welcoming beauty of Charleston”. It seems your opinions remain, well, opinions. Totally worthless opinions.
Good luck trying to sell this “hospitality” to more Americans. I’ll think about you next time I spend my money in Charleston.
All you need to do is read some the comments from the Norherners to realize the resentment. I don’t care where someone is from, but the North will always have zero respect for anyone in the South.

South Carolina has a lot of ignorant fools, it also has some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. I find this is true for everyplace I have ever been. You all need to stop generalizing, stop hating, and realize that your wasting your life away worrying about this stuff. When did america become so broken. Its over America, your time has come and gone. Your just another collapsed empire with rich people that will never have enough, and hold a big chip on there shoulder about not having it.
The older natives of South Carolina are still pissed about the war. The younger natives are a much more honest and caring group. I have been to Florence, Darlington and several low country towns that are great to visit. I live in Ohio and for the most part the rural folks are as nice as can be. I do find that there a good amount of rude and arrogant people in the larger counties, but I choose not to associate with them and not worry about their lack of respect for other humans. The most important thing to me is treating people the way I would want them to treat me and to lend a helping hand. I am not wealthy, but do well for myself and wish the hatred for each other would end today! We are in this together, whether you like it or not, and we should be helping each other through the tough times, not breaking each other down. I’ve lived in Ohio for 25 years and it’s a pretty decent place to live. I don’t understand why the people from South Carolina would pick Ohio to hate, we are like the most southern northern state when it comes to culture and attitude. People in Ohio are laid back for the most part. I’m not sure what Ohioans you’re referring to, but did you ever consider they moved to South Carolina because they didn’t fit in here either? One thing I’ve noticed is that jerks like to move around a lot because they don’t really fit in anywhere. I play XBOX Live a fair amount and there are about 10 people from South Carolina on my friend’s list and they are all nice.
I have noticed that none of them speak with a Southern accent (even though they were born and raised there) and for the most part they are just like me and my buddies that live in Ohio. I don’t understand the posts from the Southerners that believe Ohioans are advocates for a large federal government, I don’t know anybody that supports that.
However, I can respect a humorous website, I have no hate for it or the people that created it. God knows Ohioans like to poke fun at Michigan, but it’s just harmless kidding around.
I also wouldn’t suggest that “northern yanks” are a bunch of left-wing, liberal, sensitive, pussies. That’s the northeast. This site would make more sense if it was go back to New York.
Sure, Ohio has been on the decline because our corporate tax rates continued to hike on all the large corporations that used to be located here, they went to the South where they didn’t have to pay the high rates and it’s helped out the South greatly. It sucks for us Ohioans but there are plenty of us that didn’t vote for these crooked scoundrels. It’s a pattern, eventually South Carolina will become greedy and you will experience the same fate.
