STRAIGHT INTO THE TOILET
Congressional candidate Linda Ketner may be at the Democratic National Convention in Denver hitting up all the LGBT receptions, but back in South Carolina, her daddy’s money already has her on television. Today, she launched not one, but two new ads.
Granted, it’s a bit early to go on television — with 69 days left before Ketner hopes to score a nearly-impossible upset over fourth term Congressman Henry Brown. But when your best qualification for running for Congress is that your daddy owns Food Lion and you are very rich, there’s a whole lot of ground to make up.
The first spot features Ketner and her father Ralph telling us that they have a lot of money, that she’s proud to have been born in another state, and that she’s very forgetful. And since Ketner is running in a solidly Republican district, she makes sure to throw a few references to God in there.
Ad numero dos lays out Ketner’s economic qualifications. I’m not sure what they are, exactly, but did I mention her dad owns Food Lion? That’s a prerequisite for Congress, right?
Regardless, qualifications are meaningless. What’s important is what Ketner will do for the Lowcountry in Congress. Thankfully, her Website fully answers that question:
What Linda Will Do
“I have an arcade of Live Oaks on some land I own in the country and to me those oaks are living art. Their roots have been in that soil for 250 years, their newest shoots came out last spring; roots of tradition, shoots of growth, both in balance. It seems to me, that health for an individual, or a community, or a nation is found in achieving that delicate balance between continuity and change.”
Umm… what? Does that mean she’s going to plant trees around the Capitol? Perhaps create a universal health care system out of a fig branch (both Biblical and practical)?
I definitely can’t wait for that ad. It will star a singing squirrel who can paint people’s dreams, set in a magical forest.

What’re the odds of you writing a post before the election with the lede “God Hates Fags”? Because if I was a betting man…
Not only that, when was the last time this guy had a girlfriend? This guy is so angry he can’t be getting any.
Always gotta go back to the LGBT issue eh? Is she ’so gay’ for you, what about all the money that Brown gets from oil companies? 14 x more Lobbyist money, more PAC money … no wonder he keeps getting caught with his hand in the cookie jar when it comes to Sweet heart deals like Kiawah Island
oops…. you can’t use html on your site, that’s so gay, though I’m sure you’re not, sister.
How can anyone hope to beat a moron who burns down forests and gives insurance breaks to the rich?
Ralph Ketner sold Food Lion some time ago. Also, candidates who raise money (like Ketner, who has outraised Brown for the past two quarters) pay for their campaign commercials with funds raised. Linda has done a lot of good in this state with her own money. She’s bright, independent, well-spoken, and genuinely cares about our community. You, on the other hand, might consider working towards a goal - like getting your facts straight before you make ridiculous claims. If Linda Ketner works half as hard in Congress as she has in the past 25 years trying to change the laws from the outside (like she did with the Affordable Housing Trust), we’re lucky to be in this district.
McLovin’,
You do seem to have something awfully repressed in that tone of yours…. regardless, you are right in terms of the ads being weak…. That is what the post was about, right? She is a good candidate, very popular with people who have met her (Republican and Democrat), has raised good money (other people’s by the way- I know you want to paint her as a rich out-of-stater), and will have a broad group of supporters; especially in Charleston where she has worked with so many people. Henry Brown’s biggest threat from her is that people who know her will vote for her, it is an easy choice. That is where the ads fail…. they are not memorable, honestly and I hate even typing this, Jim DeMint did a pretty good job with his introduction ads. Ketner’s ads seem like they were filmed at a wake or something. Some color and her smiling (she is always smiling) would get people to remember her better.
I do not know if I would call that seat a solidly Republican seat. Charleston County is very independent and vote solidly for candidates they know (Barber crushed it in some of the most GOP precincts), Georgetown County will be tough for Brown (Ketner will mix well with the Pawleys and Litchfield crowd) especially with a good turn out on the African American side, Horry will be a battlefield but she can swing some good votes there, she is very likable….. the only place where I see Ketner running into a brick wall is portions of Berkeley County and someone more familiar would have to help me with this but I would say that the new growth over even the last 4 years (on Daniel Island and in the Goose Creek area) would be more supportive of Ketner than it would had been previously….. thats my take.
Here is my final point on this seat; Henry Brown did a great job attaching himself to the GOP label, he was without a doubt one of, if not, the most solid yes votes for Bush…. like it or not. Bush will be gone, the GOP will not control either houses in November, nor will they in January (in fact even they would admit they will lose significant seats); Henry was the self-appointed “GOP Work Horse”, but anyone who has followed his job performance lately sees that this horse is getting confused very easily lately (was it a lie or did he not remember meeting with Kiawah… this was not a simple conversation, it was a very intensive project). Aside from that all, Henry Brown does not have that large of a dedicated following, he is not that visable, he is no Fritz Hollings or Strom Thurmond or Joe Riley or even Arthur Ravenel…. he is not one of those guys who people will vote for just because he is Henry Brown. He needs to make a case, and I don’t think he can. I think people are willing to give Ketner a chance; I know I will.
I wonder where the local union types are on this race? Daddy Ketner was tough as nails on fighting unions when he ran Food Lion. So much so that bomb threats would be called into stores, just to disrupt business, in a sour-grapes strategy.
It would be ironic if organized labor was backing the candidate funded by an anti-labor corporation.
Linda should fire her ad agency. She is a much better person than the ads suggest. While not in her disctrict, I have strong ties to the low country, and feel she would be far better fo the area than Brown, who has done little or nothing of note.
Let’s get the facts straight. Linda Ketner’s has outraised Henry Brown in this election cycle. Her ads are paid for by voters in this district who believe in what she has done and will continue to do to improve the lives of every citizen in this area. She has a long history of helping people, in the lowcountry and nationally, and has demonstrated her passion for public service. We would be lucky to have someone in Congress who is fighting for us, instead of helping real estate developers on Kiawah. Ketner even has a strong and growing base of Republican support in this state, which is justified by Brown’s abysmal record.
Real simple Brown has done nothing for the people of SC-1 He needs to be replaced. Linda can do the job. Bye Henry!
It’s interesting that when all else fails people seem to feel the need to blame others for things they beluieve the other person’s parent did. Of the Scoop I expect no more, nor less. This blog is abot self-promotion above all. Earl Capps however struck me as a more thoughtful fellow than his snarky comment here suggest. Oh well, live and learn. Partisan slagning matches apparently always win out in this state.
Waldo, I suppose you’d find me more “thoughtful” if I backed the liberal candidate. Sorry, but that’s not me.
When inherited money comes from daddy, then daddy is relevant.
Why doesn’t she go back to NC and run? We’ve got an overabundance of someone-else’s money transplants here in the Lowcountry.
Anyone who knows anything about Linda Ketner knows that very little of her money has ever gone to any effort without at least a challenge for the people involved in that effort to match what she contributes. If they are not willing to make at least an equal commitment to the effort, they don’t get a dime. I would say to Earl Capps that if you are truly opposed to outside money influencing politics in South Carolina then you should be attacking the Republican candidates who grovel at the first whiff of cash from Howie Rich http://www.howierichexposed.com/hidden_money.php.
As far as this race is concerned the million plus dollars that she has raised so far is not her money nor is it her family’s money. It comes from Republican and Democratic voters in this district who know Linda Ketner and who know what she inspires in people. It comes from people who want a better life for themselves and for all South Carolinians…people who have watched her make unbelievably good things happen for thousands of South Carolinians under the most difficult of circumstances. She’s the real deal.
Regardless of her qualifications or character, an openly gay, liberal candidate has a tough row-to-hoe here in the lowcountry. Barney Frank couldn’t win down here and neither can Linda. Folks may watch the Ellen DeGeneres or Rosie O’Donnell on TV, but they don’t want their kid to grow to be homosexual. Voting for a gay may appear to some to be endorsing that lifestyle.
Also, check out those TV ads. Linda’s eyes flash to a “crazy lady” look that is a little scary.
Is Linda out or not? Is it her intent to only whisper that she’s out of the closet until the campaign is over unless Henry Brown accepts the invitation to knock that chip off her shoulder?
Does the “mainstream” press shy away from the issue and bury it or not. Charlie Smith, whom I note has commented above, at least didn’t appear to hide the issue in his races against John Graham Altman III.
So is she really “out, loud and proud” or making like old “moth balls” back deep in the closet?
Charlie - in case you check this - obviously you don’t know me very well, if at all. I’ve challenged Rich and company plenty. Just check out http://www.takebacksc.com or look at the times I’ve challenged Rich and his SCRG crowd on my blog. In fact, there are some Republicans who hate me for having done so.
I thought, as a realtor and a politico, you were a sharp guy who did his homework?
She’s a liberal, backed by the national Democratic party, and running with plenty of anti-union inherited money. I know who’s team she’ll play on, and therefore it gives me a pretty good idea of what she’ll do. That’s not what I want.
