STATE REP. TALKS UP CONGRESSIONAL ISSUES IN GUEST ED.

I don’t mean to start any crazy rumors here or anything (ed. note: yes I do), but I’m not really sure why a prominent member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives is publishing guest editorials about Congressional spending and federal budgetary earmarks. Unless, of course, he is planning to run for Congress.

Which might explain Rep. Rex Rice (R-Pickens) was in Monday’s Greenville News with an all-out assault on Congressional tax-and-spend liberals.

Remember when Ronald Reagan was president? There was this mantra of morning in America. And our great shining city on the hill was the envy of the world.

It’s hard to believe those days were 20 years ago. While time has certainly passed, the necessity for the conservative principles, ideals and reforms that prompted such unsurpassed prosperity remains certain now more than ever. [...]

Sadly, taxpayer funds used to misrepresent our state and its wonderful family-friendly tourist destinations as some San Francisco-styled homosexual haven pales in comparison to the lavish spending of some in Washington. There, Congress routinely literally flushes our tax dollars down the drain on things like a $50 million for an indoor rainforest in Iowa, $13.5 million for a world toilet summit, and even $1 million for a “Hippie Museum.”

Pundits frequently call for putting government on a spending diet. I couldn’t agree more. However, the solution is not one of those lose-weight-quick fad diets, but instead a lifestyle change. In this case, a series of sunset laws would trim the fat and keep it off the government’s hips.

Numerous Reagan references? Shots at San Francisco? “Lavish spending of some in Washington”? I’d say he’s running for Congress.

Now if only Rice, who lives in Rep. Gresham Barrett’s district, had a seat to run for. Perhaps if Barrett were to give up his post to run for a higher office like, say, governor. Then this guest editorial would make more sense.

If Rice does decide to toss his name into contention, then competitors beware. He’s from the heart of the district, he’s currently the vice chairman of House Ways and Means, and he has the ability to raise some serious cash.

Seriously??? Next time you’re paid to drop some “scoop” at least get the facts right. Rex lives in Easley, not exactly the heart of Dist. 3. He’s never met a tax increase he didn’t like and has all the charisma and personality of doorknob.

South Carolinians need to stop electing this new brand of Republicans. They do not follow the rule of law and consider themselves above it. This creates dangerous situations for some now, others later.

I’ll take a tax and spend liberal over a spend and spend “conservative” any day. We should be paying for our own crap, not handing that debt out to our kids. If he really wants to attack irresponsible spending, he should take a look at what the GOP has done since 2000.
