SUPREME COURT TO HEAR APPEAL IN FLORENCE MAYORAL RACE
I can’t imagine a whole lot that’s worse in the world of politics than losing an election by one single solitary vote.
So poor Frank Willis, the former gubernatorial candidate turned almost former mayor of Florence, who suffered that fate in the Democratic Primary last month is stuck forever wondering why there weren’t two people that could have gotten off their lazy behind and gone and voted for him. Or perhaps he won’t.
That’s because the State Supreme Court has agreed to expedite hearing Willis’ case in time for the Aug 8 deadline for a new election.
Willis appealed the one vote loss claiming that several voters who lived in the city weren’t allowed to vote, while five voters outside city limits did. The state Democratic Party and a circuit court have both denied Willis’ appeal.
The city of Florence also did its part to screw up the election by allowing voters to cast a ballot in the Republican primary at the state level, then cross over and vote in the local Democratic primary.
I’m not sure what’s going to happen with this, but it’s likely taxpayers will foot the bill. So, as usual, we all lose!
