New McCain ad pops Obama for slighting wounded troops

DEMOCRAT’S WORLD TOUR AVOIDS FLUBS, AMERICAN SOLDIERS

If aired in South Carolina, the latest television ad from GOP presidential nominee John McCain could add significantly to the Arizona senator’s 13 point lead in the state.

In the 30-second television spot, McCain attacks Democrat Barack Obama for canceling a planned stop at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany to meet with wounded American soldiers as part of his week-long world tour.

“And now, he made time to go to the gym, but canceled a visit with wounded troops,” an announcer says in the ad. “Seems the Pentagon wouldn’t allow him to bring cameras. John McCain is always there for our troops.”

The McCain campaign says the ad will air in several “key states.” But based on recent South Carolina polls, it is unlikely the Palmetto State will be one of them.

The McCain team released a statement from Army Liutenant Col. Joe Repaya, a veteran of Vietnam and both Iraq wars, who said that Obama “broke that commitment [to the troops], instead flitting from one European capital to the next. Several explanations were offered, none was convincing and each was at odds with the statements of American military leaders in Germany and Washington.

“For a young man so apt at playing president, Obama badly misjudged the important demands of the office he seeks,” Repaya said.

  1. Funny enough, McCain’s new ad accusing Obama of refusing to meet troops includes a clip of Obama playing basketball with…troops.

  2. Let’s see, the Pentagon told Obama not to go, so he didn’t go. Jesus - do you feel bad for this sort of crappy spin, or will you be proud working for this decade’s Bob Dole? See you at The Back Porch on Election Night when Grampa Simpson gets waxed.

  3. Well stated by Mayor Quinby. The Pentagon told him it would be too political for him to see injured troops, but now (much like everything that comes from the DOD) their story has changed. Another great example of your damned if you do and your damned if you don’t. BUT what I think is truly sad, is that a decorated veteran is using injured service men as a leverage for a political attack . . . truly sad. :(

  4. Quinby/Sad,

The Pentagon excuse is total BS.

A Pentagon spokesman says Obama was told he could go to the base, but that it would have to conform to Defense Department guidelines that restrict political activity on military installation. He said the Pentagon “certainly did not tell the senator he could not visit” the hospital.

  5. The ‘guidelines’ the Pentagon put up was that Obama couldn’t bring a retired General with him on the visit(they declared him campaign staff), that the Pentagon wouldn’t clear their plane to land there(a roughly 700 kilometer drive) and the Pentagon believed that any visit of his would be considered a campaign stop(and were getting cold feet).

  6. 700 kilometers, relative to the flying around Europe is nothing. If he had wanted to visit, he could have visited. There was certainly enough planning for everything else Mr. Obama wanted to accomplish. With the money in his campaign coffers he could have chartered a helicopter, or made other arrangements to get near the base and then drive over. All of the apologists for Mr. Obama are great at making excuses. His lack of committment to America as an idea, his leftist elitism, are far too evident. All of this Obasm stuff is just more liberal sickening blah, blah, blah mush. Obama will not protect America’s interests, but will appease European sensibilities. That is very dangerous.

  7. I’ve got a great idea… why not instead of blogging, you just paraphrase McCain press releases?
