NOMINEE EMBARRASSED THAT AMERICANS NO HABLA ESPAÑOL
With Democrat presidential nominee Barack Obama attempting to make a play in South Carolina and other conservative states where immigration is a hot-button issues, saying that he’s embarrassed that Americans don’t speak Spanish es idea realmente mala (is a really bad idea). The comment came up while addressing proposals to make English the official language in the U.S.
Ed Morrissey at the Hot Air blog has also picked up on this clip and notes that Obama’s argument that Eurpoean tourists speak English in America, so we should do the same, “makes no sense.”
He’s complaining that Americans don’t speak the native language when we visit Europe, but that we don’t speak the immigrant language when people move to the United States. With that argument, shouldn’t we expect Europeans to speak English when we travel there?
Thousands of supporters have already taken to Obama’s Website to thrash their candidate for flip-flopping on a number of issues. It will be interesting to see what will result from this gaffe.

That shows Obama was never a community organizer of note. If he were, he would know that getting the “hood” to speak english is the first order of buisness. We can worry about Spanish later.
We are about to elect a fool. and the sad thing is that we are doing so eyes wide open. We are getting the “government we deserve”. We are a nation of fools…replublicans so greedy yhat we have lost our way. Dems so stupid they have lost their way.
If you see the whole thing, he wants children to learn a second language not necessarily Spanish. He thinks we should be more like euros and people in other countries who know multiple languages. I think it’s a waste of time though.
Press 1 for McCain in English;
Press 2 para Obama en Espanol.
The reason most Euros speak two languages (their own plus English) is because English is the international language. Spanish is not.
Obama is clearly pandering to those who want to force the US to become a bilingual nation in order to accomodate the hordes of illegal aliens who would flood in under his presidency.
At least he didn’t work with Ted Kennedy to give them amnesty. McCain is one of the IA biggest supporters. He just won’t say it until after he gets elected. You really think he has changed in a year?
Most people do take 2-3 years of Spanish in high school anyway, and since it’s easier to learn a foreign language when you’re younger, it would make sense to start this portion of education at a younger age. Business is becoming more and more international, so putting more effort into foreign language training seems like a pretty good investment. It should make our workers, firms, and economy more competitive in the long run.
On the other hand, this plan might make him lost the votes of the xenophobes. If we teach our children how to talk to foreigners, they might start talking to foreigners!
To Bob Z,
RE: “McCain is one of the IA biggest supporters”
>>> McCain was wrong on amnesty, but he’s always supported strict border and employer enforcements and English as the official language. Obama will bring completely open borders!
To Rob W,
RE: “Business is becoming more and more international, so putting more effort into foreign language training seems like a pretty good investment.”
(1) English, not Spanish, is the international language.
(2) Immigrants need to learn English to succeed in this country.
(3) American kids need to first learn English to succeed. The average US 12th grader reads and writes at 6th grade level. Obama’s priorities are backwards.
Learning a second language for enrichment is a good thing, but Obama’s agenda is to pander to the OPEN BORDERS crowd.
If you want kids to learn a second language and have it not be a waste of time, make that language mandarin.
And the Illegal Immigration problem will solve itself within the next few years as the economy continues to fall apart.
Maybe they could illegally immigrate to China, and that would address both issues!
I’ve recently started a blog, the information you provide on this site has helped me tremendously. Thank you for all of your time & work.
