COLUMBIA MINOR LEAGUE TEAM LAUNCHES 2008 SEASON WITH CREATIVE CAMPAIGN COMMERCIAL

I saw this ad on television over the weekend and said to myself, “damn, how come I’ve never heard of this Bill Shanahan guy?” His ad makes him look viable for whatever it is he’s running for, but there’s no way in hell I missed a serious contender in any race on the June 10 primary ballot.

Then I figured, “oh, he must be some fringe candidate running for governor in two years or something.” Then he said that “hot beer must be hot and cold beer must be cold” and I instantly decided he had my vote — whatever office he’s seeking.

Then I finally shut up and listened to the rest of the ad.

Had I done that in the first place, I would have realized this is a new spot running to promote the “floundering” (pun very much intended) Columbia Blowfish minor league baseball team. And it’s a really good jab at campaign commercials.

The ad is part of an effort to boost attendance when the team kicks off its season next week in the Coastal Plain League.

Which is good because I love baseball and hope minor league ball makes it in the Capital City for years to come. Also, they have dollar beer nights. You cannot beat dollar beer nights.

Anywho, all of this is just a way of saying the team put together a great ad. Good job team. Now let’s shoot for an over .500 record this season.

This isn’t minor league baseball. It’s college players with wooden bats playing in a terrible venue. If you love minor league baseball you should move to Greenville or Charleston.

If you knew Columbia’s baseball past, you’d know that Shanahan was the GM for the Columbia Mets/Capital City Bombers in the 90s when they had Octavio Dotel, Nelson Figeroa, Preston Wilson and Terrence Long and, with Shanahan’s uncanny knack for promotion, they could always draw a crowd. Nobody does promotion like Shanahan. He channels P.T. Barnum.

Its not minor league baseball, and it is in a terrible venue, but I’d still rather go to a game there than a college game. Aluminum bats are not baseball, not to mention you can’t buy beer at a college game. I’ll support the Blowfish until one day we can get a professional club back- which Shanahan seems willing to make happen if the attendance figures can get a little better. Still a great way to spend a Tuesday evening in June.
