HOUSE SPEAKER WILL NOT RUN FOR GOVERNOR IN 2010
The list of possible successors to Gov. Mark Sanford got shorter today as House Speaker Bobby Harrell has reportedly been calling numerous South Carolina politicos to inform them that he will not be running in two years.
Numerous sources have confirmed that Harrell has been calling supporters today informing them that, after much thought and prayer and consulting with his family, he has made the decision to withhold his candidacy for the 2010 gubernatorial election.
The speaker — along with Attorney General Henry McMaster, Congressman Gresham Barrett and a few other folks — was widely speculated to make a strong run for the governor’s mansion. This will almost certainly clear the way for a McMaster v. Barrett showdown, although it is possible a few other candidates could sneak in there.
More to come…

UPDATE: In case you ever doubted that news travels fast in this state, Warren Tompkins and company beat me to this story by exactly ten minutes.

Thanks for citing us buddy.
I would have cited you, except you weren’t my source. You just clicked “publish” before I did. Anyway, fear not, I gave y’all some love for being first.
He certainly has more influence where he is now. Despite some restructuring, the Gov is still a “lame duck” when it comes to power in this state
Gresham Barrett is one of the few taking care of citizens of this state at present. I believe he would make an excellent Gov if he chooses to run.
1,2,3,4 I declare blog war!
Not to be a jerk, but Folks reported this same news April 8th- so he beat you two to the story by exactly a month and 5 days. Here’s the link:

I would rather he run and be beaten by a real republican.
Rob W - just like he reported that McMaster was out and that Harrell signed with the Quinns.

Shot- you forgot about the “Strom Problem” and other groundbreaking but alas not quite accurate (or disclosed) stories. If you put up 5 posts a day, I guess you’ve got to make a lot of it up, and I’m sure stirring up controversy is part of the business plan. However, I think it’s fair to give credit for breaking the story when it actually turns out to be true, if indeed this one does.
Will’s my friend and I have a lot of respect for him — and I can’t believe I’m agreeing with Le Shat here — but to my knowledge, Bobby hadn’t made up his mind until recently.
His April 8 story was just a prediction written as fact in the hopes it would turn out to be accurate, just like the Feb. 4 “McMaster not running” story. I guess that means he’s batting .500 on the 2010 race, which is respectable as far as prophesying goes.
But saying he beat us to the story it is like saying Nostradamus beat the 20th Century to news of the rise of Adolph Hitler.
