FORMER RNC MEMBER MIMICS MOVEON.ORG, SENDS E-MAILS SAYING SENATE REPUBLICAN COMMITTED TREASON
A recent campaign e-mail published by SC Hotline from former Republican National Committeeman Buddy Witherspoon’s Senate campaign reveals the truly disturbing nature of the malicious, libelous attacks aimed at Sen. Lindsey Graham by his challenger.
The e-mail was sent by Witherspoon’s Political Director Christopher R. Oviatt, the second ranking member of his campaign, and contained a post-script that read, “If you’ve received this email but do not wish to receive further information and updates in the efforts to rid our state and country of the traitor, Lindsey Graham, please email deportillegals@earthlink.net with the word, ‘CANCEL’ in the subject line.”
The line is reportedly even a part of his default email signature.
The “deportillegals” e-mail address is distressing enough, but to call a well-respected sitting United States Senator who has more than 25 honorable years serving in the military a “traitor” is completely classless and Witherspoon knows better.
I would expect language like this about a Republican from MoveOn.org, but not from a former member of the RNC.
If he hopes to be taken seriously for the final 40-plus days of this campaign and someday attempt to restore the reputation he has destroyed over the last few months, he should start by apologizing and firing this guy immediately.

OVIATT UPDATE: Witherspoon’s political director just sent me the following e-mail:
My email was taken and pasted/doctored onto another email page and sent out. The email that I sent out had all of the recipients blind carbon copied. My email was sent to a list of our supporters who wanted to help us distribute our campaign signs which arrived last week.I cannot help what supporters or anyone in the generl public does with the emails that I send them. All of Dr. Witherspoons material have a “paid for” on them including our lapel stickers. Our new signs are the same as the 2X8’s that were put up last year except they are 4X8’s. Because I work for Dr. Witherspoon does not mean I have any ill feelings towards Senator Graham. I do not think he is a traitor by any means, I think he is a great American. Myself or Buddy would never say anything slanderous or make false allegations against the Senator or anyone else. Though our campaigns differ on certain issues, we all want whats best for South Carolina and the USA.
The signature on the e-mail didn’t have the alleged language, so maybe he’s telling the truth. I bet what happened was those damn illegal aliens hijacked his e-mail account and sent out messages saying Graham was a traitor.
Not the Mexican aliens though, this isn’t their style. My money is on the aliens from the Andromeda III galaxy. You’ve got to watch out for those pesky little buggers.

This oviatt kid did some similar garbage when he worked as a “gilligan” to the skipper on convicted felon Thomas Ravenel’s campaign for ski instructor, excuse me US Senator in 2004.
Witherspoon is an idiot! He also lacks common courtesy and civility.
MOVEON.ORG?????? Is he serious? I think TRAITOR is the right word, just used on the wrong candidate. Any Republican candidate who wants to be taken seriously should be as far away from MOVEON as possible. What a joke…
Please chuck, pay attention. Adam drew a connection between the guy and moveon because, in his mind, moveon calling petraus a traitor is the same as this guy calling graham one. The two are not connected in any real way except for this similarity, but Adam likes to exaggerate things like that.
But with Graham you do get all the terrible policy and McCain brown-nosing you can stomach. That’s kind of nice I guess. Well, until McCain get’s slaughtered in the general election by tying his candidacy to the least popular president since polling was invented. No matter how much the democrats try to botch it, they’ll still win in a sinking economy; heck november might even be soon enough to hit the stagflation or commodities bubble that have been brewing for a while.
Someone should let Graham know you don’t gain much by sucking up to a loser.

You’re definitely giving Witherspoon more attention than he’s worth. Has Graham figured out who’s going to get his war chest, since he won’t have to spend it on ‘ol Buddy?
I thought that Graham was the third Senator from Arizona? Does he really represent South Carolina. You got to be kidding me.
I would first like to apologize to Buddy’s campaign staff and to Buddy himself for any confusion the email discussed above may have caused among folks who apparently read the email very quickly without giving the benefit of doubt as to who wrote what.
These points should clear up the confusion for the easily confused:
1. Chris Oviatt’s email address was not shown as the sender of the email.
2. Chris’s email text was within the body of the text of the email sent out from NumbersSC.com. The footer belonged to NumbersSC.com and not to Chris. I know that can be confusing but I have gotten hundreds if not thousands of emails constructed similarly over the past decade and I’m very careful before I assign text to someone who might not have sent it.
3. We at NumbersSC.com have been contacted by campaign staff and have agreed that if I or my compatriots, (private citizens all and NOT on Buddy’s payroll nor staff) do forward email in the future, that we will take care to forward only his email with no additional comments that may cause confusion for folks who have not had their coffee yet or who are overly enthusiastic to denounce those they oppose politically in a manner similar to that which they have just accused others of doing.

Questioning “a well-respected sitting United States Senator” who honorably in the military as “a “traitor” is completely classless” now that the attack is on a GOP senator huh?
Seems to me you didn’t complain at all when the swiftboat attacks torpedoed a decorated military hero in John Kerry - of course the Bush campaign had nothing to do with that “wink-wink, nudge, nudge”.
Nor did I hear any outrage when a sitting U.S. senator who gave up three limbs in defense of this nation was attacked and had campaign ads morphing Max Cleland into Osama Bin Laden.
GOP operatives follow the LEE ATWATER method of politics - lie, smear, distort, make it up if you have to so long as you can win. NOW you cry about this type of attack on one of you own?

I know something good about Dr. Buddy. His response to those who question why he is running, is Senator Graham has different ideas about what South Carolina values are.
Fact: Senator Graham promoted a general amnesty bill for illegal aliens.
Dr. Buddy will not support this type of Amnesty
Fact: Senator Graham has stated that he was not in Washington to do what people
wanted but to do what he felt was right.
Dr. Buddy will listen to his constituants and answer their inquiries.
Fact: I personally wrote Senator Graham twice last year and only received correspondence this year. Could it be because it’s election year?
Fact: I believe Dr. Buddy will be a better representative than Senator Graham
If you want more Mexicans in South Carolina, vote for my American Amnesty Amendment.
Ms Lindsey said that he does not care what South Carolina thinks, he is going to vote for what is right.
I suppose that we in S.C. do not know the difference between right and wrong.

A better question to ask is:
“How does one define Lindsey Graham so that he is NOT considered a traitor?”
I mean, seriously, he attempted to redefine “amnesty” so that it wasn’t called “amnesty.”
What’s next? If given a chance will he perjure himself and then argue over what the definition of “is” is?
Maybe the magical word transformations are a lawyer thing I don’t understand. I just know that I’d rather have an orthodontist (Buddy Witherspoon) or a civil engineer/pilot (Bob Conley) than another lawyer as Senator from South Carolina.

BTW:
If “classless” means not telling the truth in “polite company” (if such a thing exists in politics) or if it means deferring to my so-called “betters” in the new class system that puts politicians at the top of the heap and refusing to call them on their past actions, then call me classless.
The push for amnesty was unconstitutional. Graham and McCain’s bill does not even come close to “an uniform rule of naturalization” in that it singled out lawbreakers for special privileges. If Graham and McCain attempt to subvert the Constitution, then they’re traitors, plain and simple. (And yes, that same standard applies to a LOT of other politicians no matter the party both now and in the past and is EQUALLY true in those cases as well.)
The whole idea of “equal treatment under the law” gets thrown under the bus when it comes to politicians in D.C. seeking the favor of groups of people–in this case criminals who don’t belong here in the country and hurt the most vulnerable citizens the most with increased crime, taking jobs at cheap rates, and spreading diseases such as TB (and I know the latter for a fact having worked for the public health department in TB management).
