DC FUNDRAISER STRONG SIGN THAT MCMASTER IS IN THE RACE

We’re still more than seven months away from this year’s general election, yet speculation surrounding the 2010 race to replace Gov. Mark Sanford is already in full swing. There are roughly five viable names rumored to considering making a bid, but the likely frontrunner is leaving little doubt about his intentions.

Attorney General Henry McMaster will be hosting a fundraiser in Washington, DC on April 1, according to an invitation obtained by The Palmetto Scoop (PDF HERE). That’s an odd move for someone running for attorney general. To my knowledge, it would be the first time he’s ever done such a thing.

So why would a second-term attorney general who faces almost no threat of losing his post be building a new, larger financial network? Gee, I don’t know. Could it be that he’s preparing to run for something larger like, say, maybe governor?

If there had been any doubt until now that McMaster was running, I think this should put an end to that. And if I were Congressman Gresham Barrett, Speaker Bobby Harrell, Ambassador David Wilkins, Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer or anyone else pondering a gubernatorial campaign, I would be a little nervous to learn that McMaster is all-but formally in the running.

I hope he understands that , unlike Texas, the AG’s office is not a stepping stone to the Governor’s mansion.

Yeah, don’t you remember Gov. Medlock and Gov. Condon? I don’t think anyone has anything to worry about from ole Foghorn Leghorn.

Arthur Ravenel’s warning to son: SLED’s following you

Before the hammer fell on former state Treasurer Thomas Ravenel’s cocaine use, his powerful and well-connected father warned him authorities were on his trail, according to Ravenel’s first interview with investigators.

McMaster would get crushed by Barrett.

Henry tanked the SCGOP, left it in debt, allowed Jim Hodges to be elected Governor, pretty much told Fritz he could stay there as long as he wanted, and has let a rapist go free because he played politics with a high profile court case and got his tail handed to him.

Barrett is a textbook conservative and, unlike Ole Hank, doesn’t let politics get in the way of doing his job.

If “textbook conservative” and “cries like a sissy bitch at all GOP functions” are synonymous, then yes Barrett is the cat’s meow.

McMaster has never lost a primary or GOP contest. He was the only statewide Republican re-elected with no GOP or Dem opposition. His good friends are about to be in the White House.

Not a bad place to start a campaign from.

When I ponder the prospect of a Gov Bobby Harrell, I shudder. I’d support Henry in a heartbeat. He’s a true conservative, a terrific and articulate speaker, a very distinguished “southern gentlemen” and has the ole “fire in the belly” in a political campaign. GO HENRY!!
