Charles Jeter

FORMER EPA OFFICIAL TO RUN AGAINST INCUMBENT CONGRESSMAN

Bob Inglis is the third sitting U.S. Congressman from South Carolina to receive a challenger in a 2008 re-election bid, as he has now picked up a primary opponent. Former Environmental Protection Agency administrator Charles Jeter (on the left in the above photo going over strategy with his campaign manager) announced Friday at The Beacon Drive-In — a must-hit for candidates in Spartanburg — that he would be challenging Inglis in the June 10 Republican primary.

The political novice is challenging incumbent Rep. Bob Inglis in the Republican primary for the 4th Congressional District.

Jeter, 66, worked for the EPA during the Reagan administration, and before that was director of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control’s water pollution control program. He’s been an environmental engineer since 1986.

From what I can gather about this guy, his campaign will be based largely around immigration. That alone is almost enough for me to write this guy off. Add to that he’s a “political novice” with almost no cash on hand and, on paper, he probably doesn’t have a chance.

But if any member of this state’s Congressional delegation is vulnerable, it’s Inglis. Mostly because he does really wierd stuff like this. Of course, saying he’s the most vulnerable member of this bunch is like saying the black bear is the least likely bear to kill you.

Basically, his seat is pretty darn secure. But a well-funded primary candidate with high name ID and favorables could very well give Inglis a run for his money. I don’t think that Jeter is that candidate, though.

And if he wants to be that candidate, I would suggest building a website that wasn’t made with the first version of Adobe PageMaker.
