Newspaper Awards

IT’S LIKE THE OSCARS FOR SC JOURNALISTS, ONLY THERE’S NO AWARD SHOW, NO LONG SPEECHES… AND NO OSCAR

In what has to be the least exciting announcement since Gov. Mark Sanford endorsed GOP presidential nominee John McCain Thursday, the South Carolina Press Association unveiled its 2007 nameless awards for people who write for newspapers in this state. We’ll call them the “Palmetto Pressies” until they come up with something better.

Unlike the Oscars, there is no televised award ceremony (note: there could be an award ceremony, but I didn’t feel like looking into it) with a red carpet where crazy things happen and people give long, dramatic speeches thanking God, their parents, their 8th grade teacher and the crack dealer who gave them a really good tip on that big investigative piece that just won them their very first Pressie. I think the reason they don’t do all that is because the speeches would probably start with a hard news lead and all the good stuff would be in the first three paragraphs.

Topping the list of award winners was Charleston Post and Courier writer Ron Menchaca, who won Journalist of the Year; or as it would be known at the Pressies, Best Journalist in a Leading Role. Other big winners included The State, which was given first place for general excellence in the large newspaper category for the 11th straight year, Brad Nettles of The Charleston Post and Courier for Best General News Photo, and Jason Gilmer of The Spartanburg Herald-Journal who won about 75 different sports writing awards.

There was no surprise when Robert Ariail of The State won for Best Cartoon or Humorous Illustration, but there was a good bit of drama when The Charleston Post and Courier and The State split the Montgomery Freedom of Information Award. Ooooohhhhh…

The most shocking award went to the Pickens County Courier for Best Web Site in the Weekly Division. This was shocking because I went to that Website once and it is one of the worst things I have ever seen. It looks like it was designed and maintained by a third grade class whose teacher was also the class gerbil. To put this award in perspective, “LINK” came in a close second — whatever the hell that is.

Unfortunately there were no awards given to bloggers, who everybody knows are way better than MSM journalists. But what would you expect from an organization that invites bloggers to an event on blogging, only to kick those bloggers out.

Almost as bad, there weren’t any awards given to political writers. Not that we have many good ones left since Aaron Gould Sheinin left, but still.

You can see the entire boring list after the jump:
